True squiggle thats why I said ..so called ..if they were true christians they would show compassion.

Yes, but they see themselves as true Christians and other Christians as wishy washy liberals who are failing God with their tolerance of sin (as they see it).  Their god is a judgemental Old Testament one.  The Old Testament is in the Christian cannon and regarded as the word of god. When they spout their hate, many of them will believe in their hearts that they are doing God's work.

They're a poisoned and screwed up Church with a set of values to which the self righteous, the hypocrites, the hate-filled and the spiteful will naturally gravitate toward.

Carnelian

Carnelian it is not touched on too much but if you believe in God (which I do) then you also have to believe in the devil.  I know many don't want to believe there is such a thing, which is exactly what the devil wants, but he is very active and will win as many souls as he can.

I often hear about the terrible things in the Old Testament but there are so many beautiful things as well and the tribes that the Israelites warred against were often guilty of terrible acts like child sacrifice.

The people of Westboro Baptist Church need to really go back and read about the loving God who is revealed in The Bible.  Jesus sent by His Father to save all of His Children was loving and patient and full of compassion.  We all have a choice, I have made mine.

There is a big difference between our Christian lite attitude, as embodied within the C of E, and people who follow the bible. The bible is a book full of violence, sex, discrimination, and intolerance. I don't normally do essays however for the benefit of Erin....... 1. The quote was something along the lines of "likewise shall ye perish!" so I expect to die in the bath. 2. Mo Mowlam was of the "sticks and stones" school. When working in Ulster she was constantly surprised that people, rather than ignore marches/demos, would go out of their way in order to be offended. 3. Something which should have stayed in Kansas has been brought onto my favourite forum. It's bad enough when people discuss Dorothy. 4. The only way to deal with these people is not to take them seriously, or even use satire. All in my humble yet curmudgeonly opinion.

I see "Religion" as a set of "Stories" to instil in the populous a "Society".

Our Mothers told us stories "Old Wives Tales" as children to instil fear and manners in us.

The Bible and other Religious Tomes (All written by people living on Earth) are full of such "Stories" to make people "Fearful" of what might happen if we do not conform.

Thankfully most people grow to realise that their Mothers told them those "Stories" because they were to keep them and others safe in words that children understand, and as adults we grow to understand that they were just stories.

I did not bring these people on to your forum.I replied to the thread with the statement issued by the protesters to  justify why they picketed Whitney Houstons funeral, as for doing an essay for my benefit ....seriously no need .

Kevin's speech was the only part of the ceremony I watched. I wasn't a Whitney fan but I just happened to be on the BBC website at the time and cos I was feeling nosy I clicked on the live link to see what was going on just as he was starting to talk.  I thought his speech was beautiful, funny and engaging.

Nor me... great voice, certainly, but not my type of songs... I got drawn into the human side of the ceremony in spite of myself though when I only intended listening to music.    It wasn't showbizzy at all.   I don't understand how Dionne Warwick seemed not to know that Aretha was 'too ill' to attend though and introduced her.. and Piers Morgan has tweeted today it was strange that she wasn't too ill to do her own show on the same day.

Aretha Franklin has paid tribute to Whitney Houston after being forced to miss her funeral yesterday (February 18).
The soul legend was scheduled to perform at Houston's service in New Jersey, but declined to appear due to "terrible leg spasms and locked muscles".

Franklin did, however, perform a concert at the Radio City Music Hall in New York that evening, where she spoke lovingly of her late goddaughter.
"I hope that there's something I will sing, or I have sung, that will lift all of our heavy hearts today," WENN quotes her as telling the audience.
The 69-year-old later performed a cover of Houston's famous track 'I Will Always Love You' and said: "She was a very fine young lady... one of the best, greatest singers.
"She was giving, gave so much of herselfâ€Ķ God bless you, Nippy. We'll always remember."
Franklin claimed shortly after Houston's death on February 11 that the star had tremendous trouble dealing with fame.
