I would love to own a narrow boat and sail wherever/whenever i wanted to various place in the UK. It would be like a gypsy on the water. I just hope i can do this before i die.

I walked over llangollen aqueduct once, I quite fancy one of their barge holidays, just so i can go over it on a boat.

Gyps I love the idea of all of those types of breaks.  The canal boats is just something I would love to do.  Plus before I die, I will travel across the USA and Australia in a motor home.  I will, I will, I will.

I am serious when I say I want to stay in a gypsy caravan   Im going to do it this year.  I want to find a really nice one, because some of the ones ive seen are all a bit "eco friendly" for my liking. I want to stay in a clean, plush, nice one thats not at all grotty or eco in any way   *sorry eco types*

I watched that program on Quest where Alan Herd did up a barge named Dover and traveled the canals from up North down to London stopping at various places on the way. He met loads of folk who use barges on the canal to make a living and who live on their boats. Would be a god-send to be able to move on every day or week to a new location.

There are so many amazing places in the UK, wouldnt it be great to just go to them at the weekend, explore, go out, and not have to find a hotel for the night.  It has its perks.

Have you googled Holidays in Romania? This is where the true Gypsies come from and i am sure you would love the life of the Gypsies over there.

This would be great as a permanent home for retirement. No Council tax -water bills- leccy bills gas bills -house insurance etc; Just fuel for the Van and some propane gas for cooking. Heaven on a plate.

Ooooooooooh i love the cabin on wheels at Calvados - must find a way to save this site. Some lovely hols there!

There used to be a " community barge" on the Forth and Clyde canal - we used to take groups of teenagers there for a week at a time when I was a yoof worker, it was magic ! 

Well actually gypsies came from many different places, mostly north Africa and India before travelling across Europe. But ...no, I want a holiday in gypsy caravan in this country.

My ancestors were Gypsies from Madras and married into English travellers. You'd never know it to look at me - i am as fair as fair and so are my kids - my sister and her kids are the direct opposite - you can see foreign blood even several generations removed!

I never knew that! that is fascinating that you know that much about your history.... Right well you will be dong some gypsy dancing on the next gaga party!!!!

My family tree starts and stops with a couple of generations then we are all stumped  

I have some sparkly red shoes that I tend to click the heels together and I can travel anywhere.

No ................it kind of died out with my great grandparents. My great, great , great (I think) grandad came over from Madras in 1846. In the 1860's some of the family were living in tents in Cinderhill in Sussex - two sisters (from the Indian line) married two brothers. The work was chair caning and lavender sellers. I think my nans nan (or mum) maybe jumped the broom above a pub in Kent (hop picking) - my Dad taught me some romany when I was small (long forgotten).

When i watch Big Fat Gypsy Weddings there are certain things that make me think ...............oh yeah - a few bits did linger (the cleaning etc) not the style of dress and dance i hasten to add!

I think that is such an interesting heritage. I bet people are really surprised, and impressed when you tell them. Kind of the romantic ideal we have of gypsy history. Fab! 

Yeah but .............i think life was hard TBH. I know a lot of my family history from two sides (my maternal grandfather) and my (paternal grandmother) the other two links are a bit sketchy but .............I do find it fascinating. My mums, mum was from a mining village (Maltby) she moved down South to work in service in a big house - my grandad was a plasterer doing work in the house - she started courting and became pregnant  (didn't know that until after she died) - she married the humble plasterer (nicest man I ever knew) but always had delusions of grandeur having once worked in the big house. Very 'Upstairs/Downstairs' she loved that programme - I wish I'd taken more time out to listen to her tales.

I said that I would help my mum trace our family tree, now she is getting on in life. But its hard because she comes from Ireland and from what I know its harder to trace. 

I know what you mean about listening to tales, I need to do a bit more of that with my mum.

The tree house looks fab. A lot of the breaks abroad on that site are much cheaper than the uk versions.
