Did you ever have any when you were at school? I did, I wrote to a boy from the Netherlands for years.
What ever happened to penpals, can you still get them, I would love lil gyps to have a penpal that made her actually write letters instead of emails.

Yep, I had one in primary school. She was from New York and I ended up visiting her and vice versa. I hated her 
I only stayed in touch coz I loved the Mum & Dad! Have lost touch now though 
We did a German exchange trip at school.. so got assigned penpals...
mine seemed ok-ish when we were writing to each other... but like Ells, I hated her... & she wasn't right keen on me.
We didn't stay in touch once the trips had taken place
We used to write to French kids. I loved those blue air mail letters we got from the Post Office, am i showing my age 
We didnt meet up tho...cant remember why...
We are twinned with a village in France - the association is twenty years old - we have participated for eighteen years. We have some really wonderful friends - looking forward to their visit at Easter. As for pen pals .............I never had one but I do know two people who have life long friends (one Swedish, one Canadian) - it is really a bit hit and miss though - God only knows who you could end up conversing with!
I had a French penpal at school, we sent each other parcels of chocolate and random things, I remember sending her pop socks and she sent me a T-shirt as well.
Then my parents split up, we kept in touch for a while but I wasn't in the mood to write letters most of the time so we drifted apart.
I had two when I was school age and beyond. Both Bay City Rollers fans. One was from California, she came over and stayed with us for a month. Really lovely girl. We wrote for about 5 years and then tailed off.
The other was a girl from Bourne in Lincs. I never met her but we also wrote to eachother for about 5 years.
I have an old school friend and we have written to eachother for the last 35 years. We very rarely see eachother but write about 4 times a year. Always letters, never e mails even though she's lived in France for the last 10 years.
I tried it once.. can't remember how I got into it.. didn't papers and magazines used ot have ads for penpals and stuff? Any... we exchanged about three letters... I was lazy at letter writing even when I was 12. I still remember she was called Helen Bathurst though, and she was from Essex, and she stood on a wasp in bare feet.
I love getting them and enjoy writing them back
