We can't have a tree this year...   we really just can't.

Tinsel round the mantlepiece is looking out of the question too.

I don't even think we can have a place to pile up the pretty wrapped pressies!

I do love the kitten ... I really do (I DO I DO I DO)....      but she is tearing the place apart...

any suggestions for how we can make the place feel christmassy without it becoming another target for the flying ball of chirping fur, teeth & claws?

put the tree in the room undecorated for a while and see what she does - then gradually decorate it over a few hours - do NOT put tinsel on the tree - if eaten it messes with the digestive system really badly

have a spray bottle or water pistol ready  and when she does something you dont want her to do spray a little in her direction not necessarily on or at her in the first instance [ you could actually point the spray but make a hissing noise  ] with a sharp no !!   it might just curb her ways a little if she realises the spray relates to her bugging you

my friend has a parrot and that is the only way she controlled it - everytime it tried to dominate a conversation or wanted attention she sprayed the parrot till it got the message - she then used it on the cats

What Mrs H said.

It can be done Ditty - cats can be taught - eventually they get the message. I have had cats, kittens and xmas trees over the years and have just been firm and said no a lot. An occasional tap on the nose works too because that is how the mother cat admonishes her kittens - it doesn't have to be hard but it makes them stop what they are doing.

Distraction works as well - get her a little piece of tinsel of her very own and every time she attacks the tree, distract her with that.

I think we must have an exceptionally naughty kitten...

I've tried the no's, the spraying..   the water squirting thing (only used a plant spray.. the one we used to use on the dog...    the kitten doesn't care...   short of getting one of those big pump action super soakers & blasting her away I don't think the water thing is gonna help with this one)

Our tree is a fibre optic..    even without decorations there is the wire..     god she does love to chew on a wire..

She's probably saving us a fortune on leccy cos we have to switch everything off at the socket unless actually using it...   in case she decides to go for a sneaky chew.

Don't get me wrong..    she is lovely.    Just when I have had enough of her shenanigans, she does something very very cute or loving.. just in the nick of time.

I am not putting a tree up..     there is another reason why not..      AJ (my dog) is still not well, so the place we normally put the tree is currently taken up with his crate (he was on crate rest for 3 weeks....  that's over now...   but he still uses it as his kitten free sanctuary).

Anyways... back to the baaaad kitteh..      my twinkley indoor window lights are out... she'd go for them.. and the wires..     tree is out..     tinsel round the banister is out.

Its looking like its going to be a bit of tinsel round the mirror over the mantlepeice & thats it

Thank you though..   I do appreciate your suggestions xx

Might not be a bad idea to let it go this year, Ditty, and then try again next year.

oh... I really am gonna "let it go" this year Lori..    I decided that weeks ago.    Its just sitting here, & reading about how christmassy other people feel in their decked out front rooms..    & imagining Christmas day here..     I think we need something to give it that crimbo buzz.

I am gonna go with the tinsel round the mirror & wall lights..    and I have some twinkly lights that I used to put up at the window in the living room.   thats now  no no (its that window that I keep having to rescue her from the curtain rail )   but I have had a brainwave..   I am gonna put them up over the double doors that lead from the living room to the dining room..     that will work..   cos they will plug in behind the telly with all the other plug in things - which is the strictest No Cat Zone in the house (apart from the fridge..     the little sod keeps sneaking into the fridge when people open the door...    we have opened the door on numerous occaisions to see her sitting there looking at us with a gormless look on her face)

Since I've had the kittens, I had a birthday, come back from hospital and people have started sendind me christmas cards. NONE of it can be displayed because the devils on horsebacks mow everything down, friends ask me how they discover this as 'new' stuff, but they do. It all goes under books on my book case and I STILL have to shout at them to get off there. It's totally uncanny.

Well Hugo the Bengal has been okay with the tree(so far) he did have a paw and nibble at the branches a few times but  I just sprinkled him with water from a jug and he got the message to leave it alone. He got his claws trimmed at the vet on Monday,Bengals have really long strong claws,so he is now Bawless and clawless. He weighs 6 kilos but he's pure muscle however the vet stated that was his maximum weight. He was one in November.
