BUT since I went to the dentist the other day for some impressions to be done for a crown I am having it has been MURDER!!!! nearly everytime I open my face, my jaw clicks and feels like it is not inline with the rest of my jaw it is driving me slightly potty!!

Any body had issues with their jaw, after a visit to the dentist? do you think it will put itself right or am I gonna hjave to have something hideous done to put it right**blink**

Thats wierd Zazz  . Sometimes you "pop" a joint temporarily... like in your knee - Never done it to my jaw though.

I know that the nerves in your jaw are VERY sensitive - anyone roughly working about there etc could have done some damage - hopefully temporary! Did the dentist really extend your mouth when he was taking the impression?

This kind of thing has happened to me before Zazz, and especially when I have been to the dentist.  I think your jaw has become irritated and your joint has become inflamed - because it is a joint.  Take some anti inflammatories (diclofenac if you can get hold of some, and if not, take some ibuprofen along with some paracetamol.)

Try not to open it too wide for anything, and don't keep opening and closing it to check how bad it is, because you'll make it worse.   I am pretty certain that there has been no actual physical damage (though I am not a doctor so couldn't say for sure.  If it's still pissing you off in a week or so, go to your GP, but I would wager that it's OK by then.

I will be reading this thread with interest

Mine is never that bad Ditty, but my hubby has times when it's like that.  Maybe only once or twice a year, but it is unpleasant when it happens.

I agree with this ^^^

I once went to a clumsy dentist in London and had a haematoma [massive swelling ] on one side of my jaw for the next week or so. No permanent harm done - it was just cos he'd roughed the area about a bit. It went away no problem. Try anti-inflammatories as Sparkles suggests, or perhaps even ring the dentist and get him to prescribe something for you Zazz.

I live with a clicky jaw. My dentist is always amazed by it. And, it always hurts like hell for a few days after I've been to the dentist. Sometimes bothers me at other times, too.

Went to a specialist once, and here's what they recommended: They were going to put me in metal braces for 2 years, THEN they were going to break my jaw and re-set it (wired shut for 6 weeks or something), THEN they were going to put me BACK into braces for 2 years.

I have opted to keep my clicky jaw, and I just take ibuprofen as necessary.

You know.... its funny you should say this..

Ickle once went for an orthodontic referral..    it was private (meaning we would be paying... & it was London... so paying through the nose)..   the bloke wanted to do something similar with her.

He was a bit crap though (had forgotten to bring her xrays from our dentist with him...  didn't have her name right)..   we both felt he was just looking for the work, so never went back to him.

I didn't put this together with the clicky jaw thing til reading your post though Lori..     I do seem to remember him saying something about misaligned jaw or something..

Y'know Ditty be careful... trust your gut feeling rather than believing in the "specialist". The guy [ an oral -  maxillofacial ] surgeon who messed my work up was based in Harley Street. I later found out he had numerous complaints to the GMC and had actually been suspended by the NHS!!!

Have second opimions if you can.

I have a clicky jaw too, sometimes I get the most awful headaches. My ear on the affected side pops randomly too.

Don't fancy all the stress of getting it fixed, as I already spent about 3 years in braces when I was a teenager.

Zazz, maybe you should go back to your dentist if it doesn't go away? It will probably go back into place on its own though.

Rosey..     we won't be pursuing it..   Ickle's clicky jaw doesn't bother her often (& tbh...  she moans about the slightest ache & pain...  I am sure if it was really bothersome she'd be rolling around on the floor or something ).

She's happy with her teeth... I am happy with her teeth...    so at the moment, I can't see a problem.

This thread is interesting though.. its handy to know that's what that was all about...  should it cause probs in the future
