I've never done it, but mam used to make her own custard tart for a Sunday tea with eggs and milk and home made pastry.........WOWSER! 

See I was deprived, my mum used to use Birds....which I used to mix into a paste in a bowl and add to hot milk on the stove...........which I had to keep stirring  in case of lumps.......

Was you a Compton or a gravy Browning?

I've done the Birds method, but home made is far superior

I often make my own with any old internet or cook book recipe - it's quite easy.

I quite often open a tin of Birds or make from Birds powder as my Mum likes it that way!

I am going to make my own homemade custard this weekend...will report back, and I promise there will not be a bird in sight!

As long as you strain out the feathers it's a cinch ............honest

I only have Birds custard because it hasn't got any eggs in it 

I can take or leave custard.... 

but egg custard tarts (the really deep ones) are my fave of all cakes! 

I made my own once - it tasted like sweet scrambled egg

Right, I have just made my first homemade custard and hubby and Grandaughter loved it......I am now going to put half of it in the freezer to make Icecream, will let you know later how it goes.
