Argh! I don't know what to do!
The computer engineer who let me down so much has just sent me an email. He's promised to send someone to fix everything, but I really don't know whether to trust him or not.
A couple of weeks ago, he told me he hadn't been in touch because he'd been ill. Then last week he said "we've had a fatality". Now this email tells me they've had a break-in and he's promising to fix everything they've left undone.
WTF???

sounds like the latter to me PC. I hope you didn't pay him up front? and if you did, he should refund you or pay for someone else to fix it
I did pay him up front, unfortunately.
The thing is that, every time he made an excuse, he offered me something free for the new puter. Now he's saying he's going to give me all he offered (he's listed it all in the email), If he actually comes through with it all, including a copy of 64-bit Windows 7, then he'll have actually given me stuff almost to the value of what I paid for his time.
Peter, all I can say is, at least he is still in touch.......don't give him any more money, keep all the Emails and let him fix your computer.....see what happens then....

see the way I look at it is why email you? If he really is sorry and has had a terrible time, which let's face it can happen to anyone, why not be a man and come to tell you face to face.
The positive side of the email is that you have something in writing and should this go further (and I hope for your sake it doesn't get to that) you will have evidence.
I think you need to ask him to confirm if he's going to fix your pooter and load all the extra bits he promised you. If not, who is he getting to do all he's promised you and tie him down to a date - the sooner the better and of course you need to confirm he pays as you've already paid him. (did you pay him by cash, cheque or credit card?)
I really hope it works out for you PC and as much as you might not want to, you've got to pin him down to dates and give him a time frame or the barsteward cos living you piddling in the wind.

I think you're right, Syd. I'm gonna have a word with a PC-savvy friend of mine tonight just to see what he thinks, but I'll probably end up giving the sod one last chance.

I'm one of these people that got screwed over so I make anyone who deals with me sign their life away in blood and I make sure there is always a paper trail

Well the good thing is that I paid most of it through Paypal, so I can always set up a dispute through them if I need to. I think you're right about tying him down to a date. I've got to order some memory for it anyway, so I'll order that and arrange to have his engineer come out to fix everything the day it arrives.
Right, I've now got the new memory and he's promised to have an engineer with me on Monday morning. We shall see. In any event, I'm keeping the claim going with PayPal until I know whether or not he turns up.
If he doesn't, I have a friend who will talk me through getting the machine going myself, though I'll probably still have to pay someone else to come and fit quieter fans to the thing.
Glad things seem to be looking up peter.....Roll on Monday
Oh jeez Peter - you must be ready to wring his neck, whilst having to stay calm so that he doesn't run off with your money ... all your training must be coming in handy
Do you keep asking yourself "how does this make you feel"
Lol something like that, Rexi. Actually the training has helped. It's meant that i haven't bottled up the anger, but found safe ways to let it out. It's also helped me to be assertive without being aggressive.
