The question over Iran is its nuclear intentions. It says that it is intended for peaceful purposes- to build power stations for energy. But Iran has an abundance of energy resources - substantial oil reserves and natural gas reserves second only to those of Russia. The president of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is hostile to Israel and there is a suspicion that his intentions for the nuclear programme are far from peaceful when they have all those natural resources.

The American believe that Iran is not yet capable of nuclear ballistic missiles but thinks they will be ready within 2 years. Hence the news story. The Guardian article says that Barack Obama does not want to go into another war, but the hawks in America are of a different opinion.

Iran's nuclear programme has been assisted by Russia. For America to go to war against Iran without full UN backing would be disastrous for the world. Not only does it needs the UN to back it, but also the support of other countries in the region.

War against Iran is a very different matter compared to the wars in Afghanistan, Libya and Iraq.In military strength, the US has the greatest power of any country followed by Russia. Afghanistan is 51st, Libya 39th and Iraq 36th.Iran is 12th.
