Now my knowledge of bakewell tarts are, Pastry, Jam, Almond spongey topping............what is this mysterious bit between the pastry and the jam?....I have been missing a vital ingredient!

Chips and gravy tastes like roast potatoes and gravy. I personally don't care for it, but lots do. I like my chip shop curry sauce (not the chinese one) on chips but, I don't eat them now so it is irrelevant.
I love chips with vegetarian gravy yummm
Chips with gravy would go all soggy
Do you have gravy with your roast beef and roast potatoes?
If yes....then whats the difference? Both chips and roast potatoes are just potato in a 'shell'.
Yes. the bits that are in contact with the gravy go a bit soggy, but so do your roast/boiled potatoes.
You think that's bad. We have Chips and Clotted Cream down here.
Ahhaha! As if.
(1) I love chips with gravy
(2) I love chips with cheese
(3) I love kebab shop chips with garlic mayo and burger sauce (we call them dirty chips)

Really? you MUST BE!!! LOL, only kidding. I get what people are saying about how you have gravy with roasties, and that makes sense, yes......but for some reason, I just can't get on board with chips and gravy. It just doesn't gel with me... Ketchup yes, gravy no. Especially if they're greasy chips YUK! Must be psychological.
Yes scraps and curry sauce, on the fish too
The Bakewell Tart, not to be confused with the Bakewell Pudding, is a shortcrust pastry with a layer of jam and a sponge filling with almonds. The Bakewell Pudding on the other hand is a flaky pastry, with a layer of jam and an egg and almond filling. The tart then can be covered with a layer of fondant. Only the pudding originates from the Derbyshire town of Bakewell[
Some recipes have a layer of almond paste between the pastry and the jam
You know what? I have NEVER tried it! So I can't say whether it's shite or alright!
Middle son's fiancee likes chips with cheese - and gravy!
Chips and Cheese! Also haven't tried that.
