To be fair OP, they did inherit a deficit.
As did Gordon Brown, Tony Blair, John Major, Margaret Thatcher, Jim Callghan, Harold Wilson, Ted Heath, Harold Wilson, Alex Douglas Home, Harold MacMillian, Anthony Eden, Clement Atley, Winston Churchill, Neville Chamberlain... etc

Not that they like to mention such minor details.
They also don't like to mention that the Tories 1979 to 1997 only ran a budget surplus for 3 years in 18.

I'm not sure whether they inherited a deficit per se. They've laid a deficit on us, but all seems Hunky Dory at the higher levels.
This graph shows the UK deficit over the years. Makes interesting reading. When Blair took office in 1997 the books were balanced after 10 years of tory cuts and taxation. By the time Cameron moved into number 10, the deficit was ÂĢ170 billion which is predicted to continue to rise until next year.

Had it been this bad in the past, even J.M. Keynes would have concentrated on some other branch of mathematics. I'm not disputing what you are saying Carnellian but it's devoid of historical context. Just saying. Night all.
