firstly - 'toid... good luck, hope you get a full time post, then a better job offer so you can tell them to stick it up their ass.

Secondly.... I used to be one of those people Joe.. simply because I never had to be.  I realise now I've been extremely fortunate in my working life to date working for people I could respect and trust.     Not the case now unfortunately.   Although the company I work for is small and only a few years old.. a UK division of a larger Irish company - we're (touch wood) doing well and profits and turnover have grown year on year and we've never made a loss, not even in the first few precarious years.     Last year, we got a letter from the MD saying the auditors asked why they'd never cut wages because - and I quote - 'everyone else is doing it these days', so the old fart decided he'd just flag up to everyone that that might be on the cards.   Not because it was necessary, but because he could in other words.     After working for 30 odd years without one, I sent said old fart a letter telling him if that did happen i would not be accepting and treating it as an illegal stoppage of earnings... and (feeling like a bit of a user) I'm now a union member.

So far.. so good... but of course nobody's talking pay increases either.

My daughter works for an oil company and has just got 7.5% rise ..........she works hard and sometimes has a moan - I don't think she realises how lucky she is.

Blimey Sooz - that is good!   Ask her if there's any vacancies!  I thought even the oil industry were feeling it - my brother works for a refinery and they're constantly trying to make cut backs.  They told him he could have 28 men to do a job recently - for a start it wouldn't have been nearly enough and it wouldn't have been safe either.    He's a bit fiery though and told them so - and ended up employing 120.   I think so many companies are just using this current climate to try to score a bit of extra profit tbh.

Been made redundant around five or six times in all.  My longest stint in a single job has been five years.  To be honest, it's no wonder people opt for a life on benefits rather than be screwed over by one employer after another.

This is a fact that governments totally refuse to comprehend while they're busy making it ever easier for bullying bosses and hire and fire recruitment.

It really winds me up when those who've been fortunate to be never laid off or made redundant prattle on about how virtuous they are because they've never had a day on benefits.

Update - nobodyis interested in the shitty part-time jobs they're trying to replace most of our current full-time  jobs with.

Everyone seems to be going for full time or redundancy, me included. Union (with national rep) has been in talks with management most of the week and there's a union meeting with staff tomorrow. Not a management one though, they've already made up their minds.

My last day at work before 2 weeks' leave is tomorrow, and I'm having to stick around for the union meeting to see what pans out. I also have to submit my job application tomorrow, as I'll be away when the deadline comes. Everyone else has until next Tuesday.

Whatever the outcome - I hope it works out well for you . These are very worrying times

Oh jeebus, now you're making me feel guilty.

Me and OH decided not to cancel our break in Amsterdam (reason one, we wouldn't get the money back. Reason two, neither of us has had a proper break all year).

Did I do wrong?

No way!

You deserve a break.

Are you hoping for redundancy really, or is it a crap package?
