Do you remember the days when High Streets were virtually empty on Sundays? When you knew the exact opening hours of your local newsagent or nearest chemist - and when Sunday markets were absolutely heaving?
I think some shops had started trading on Sundays before the above date - but certainly in England and Wales until the late 80's (at least) very few shops were open.

Yes, I remember it well........ and shops were closed from early on Christmas Eve until the day after `Boxing Day....... and garages just sold petrol and nothing else....
and you could only buy alcohol during opening hours - outside of this the aisles were cordoned off

... but yes, I remember when banks shut early.... and didn't open on Saturday... plus when we went to stay with relllies on the north wales borders , some pubs shut on Sunday.......
My parents-in-law owned a grocery store and every Thursday afternoon was half-day closing ... 20 years later and they still go out on Thursday afternoons

But I loved our coal man. And our milkman was called Jock, and he used to let my brother ride on the milk float (I suspect he'd me called a perv these days!)

But I loved our coal man. And our milkman was called Jock, and he used to let my brother ride on the milk float (I suspect he'd me called a perv these days!)
The coal men used to scare me to death as a child .............................they were all black and sweaty and the coal lorry was so noisy!
I must live in an area that is very behind with the times we still have a coalman, milkman, fruit and veg man, mobile shop and lemonade van that come round here weekly. It's great because it mean's I rarely have to walk to the shops Although the icecream man is a different story.....I wish he'd eff right off!!
I remember when the only shop that was open on a Sunday was the newagent and that was only till noon....the local sweetshop might have been open too....and all the locals shops shut for hald day on Wednesday.
When I was 16 I did work for a while in a large supermarket...which shut at 6pm everyday except Saurday when it shut at half 5....and it was shut on Sundays!!

Awww, those were the days.........it seemed like a simpler time then.... but I guess all people over 40, think that about when they were a kid!

I share loads of the memories in here.
Before the Sunday trading it was brilliant living in the area I do as there are loads of Jewish shops and they always opened on Sundays.
I must admit though that I don't like shops being open on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. I think we should have a couple of days a year when capitalism isn't king
Sadly change is not always progress - even the City Council don't appreciate our tradition
