I think it's more that he was sticking something else somewhere else. His ex-wife has all the evidence and a woman scorned etc. She's a good economist too.
She wrote a book I think. There was all sorts of stuff involving him going off with a bisexual aide and whatever. But there are ways of keeping these things schtumm!

He criticised Clegg, suddenly this story comes out at the same time as the Tories say they will bolster Clegg.
It also takes the pisspoor government out of the limelight.
