Our birthdays both fall around Christmas (as do most other family members). very, very badly planned - all children, ourselves, childrens OH's and grandchildren fall between October and January.

Therefore - I spend between ÂĢ50 and ÂĢ100 on my OH and vice versa. That's just how it goes. ÂĢ100 is about our limit - on kids, grand kids - everyone. It can get silly really and I've never gone down that route .................it's not that I'm mean but ................as I say - it can get silly IMO.

Depends on age as you say Pirate, started off whilst courting spending loads (borrowing if broke)...lot of life in between...Now, if he has'nt got what he wants, he only has to look at me........

That doesn't sound too mean. Apart from subjecting her to your bits dangling beneath a tray, that's mean!

You trying to put her on death row? Cos that's where I'd be if you dangled your bits in my face then minute I opened my eyes, let alone on my birthday

Looking at your list of gifts, I don't think it's mean. If it's stuff she wants then I'm sure she'll be appreciative.

In regards to expense, then that's down to how the couple live. If they enjoy the finer things in life then I'd imagine that's how they celebrate, equally if a couple live in a tent up on a hill somewhere then they probably get just as much joy on their birthdays as a couple who fly to Paris for dinner.

I do think these things need to be equal to a degree, though, especially if financial situations of both people are similar. There's nowt worse than going to a lot of trouble for your partner and when it's your turn you get a load of tat from a pound shop or summat that means frig all

It isn't always the expensive gifts which mean the most.

I agree ..............it's not always about the money. It's thinking about what someone would really like. if you take heed throughout the year and can surprise with something that someone wants it's more special than spending shed loads on frivilous tat IMO.

His last birthday i took him to see elbow (my fave band) and paid for the hotel and dinner and drinks. The one before an xbox the one before erm can't remeber but I'm sure it was something with a plug on it, so we'll say for a run of the mill birthday around ₮200 to ₮250 and a big birthday around ₮500ish.

For my sisters we have a ₮50 rule for birthday's and Christmas, well there or there about.

Very clever.    Happy Birthday Mrs Pirate...    I liked the sound of her prezzies... I'd rather have a bunch of little prezzies that I like than one big expensive prezzie.    How did the extra special breakfast surprise go down though...?

Does money really come into it? TBH - you spend what you can afford on something you think they'll really like (within your budget) To put yourself into debt for a grand gesture is a bit stupid really.

Everyone on here has different incomes and lifestyles so to ask 'What would you spend?' is a bit daft really. It's all relative to the individual.

Don't really have a set amount, just buy what we think each other would want.  The most I have ever spent on him for a birthday (although I did say it was for Christmas too as his birthday is quite close (I did buy his Christmas crap too)) was ÂĢ1750 on a watch he really loved.

Edited to add: It was his 40th birthday
