Wasn't that era essentially getting by on your looks? The Hair Metal musicians took the androgyny of the New Romantic and Glam Rock eras and mixed it up with heavy metal and punk guitar riffs but not punk attitudes - they were too corporate for that!

Hair metal -as you put it- was a completely different take on music. It depended more on talent and not the ability to "recreate" music on a keyboard. They actually did play music. It wasn't all good but it was real and in no way subsidised by electronics. New Romantics and Glam Rock played their part in all that but really....to say "hair metal" music was rubbish? I don't think so and if you really read up about Nirvana and the grunge bands you'll see that there is quite a big influence there from the 80s greasy rockers.
