CD is still the most portable format.  I can't play MP3s or any other music file in my car or on my CD player.  On the other hand, I can't play CDs on my mobile phone.  MP3 is a good way to have lots of music at hand to put on an MP3 player or micro SD card for your mobile and it cuts down on storage space, without too much lose of quality.  Thankfully the dark days of DRM on CDs and MP3 files are receding. I've not had any problems in converting all my CDs to MP3.

True, there's a whole set of aesthetic niceties about vinyl but the quality of the recording depreciates so quickly after just a few plays and it's not really a portable format.
