Brian Dowling has tried out for the job fronting ITV2's the Xtra Factor, the Herald can reveal.

In what could be a massive stepping stone in his showbiz career, the Kildare native has met producers of the spin-off show as they cast their net far and wide in a bid to replace Konnie Huq.

Now ambitious Brian (32), who returned to our small screens this week after joining Katherine Lynch on RTE's Wagon's Den, is the latest personality to throw his hat into the ring.

"This could be a huge career opportunity for Brian and he's determined to go for it 100pc," said an RTE insider.

"It's still early days and they're keeping a very open mind when it comes to Konnie's replacement. But Brian could definitely be in with a shot. He's very well known in Britain, thanks to his time on Big Brother and his profile was boosted even more when he won the last-ever show. This is the job that everyone wants right now but he's very likeable and has a lot of TV experience. The fact that he's also Irish will stand to him a lot."

Brian's many fans obviously agree too -- they have set up a Facebook page campaigning for X Factor bosses to give him the job. But he's not the only Irish star who has been linked with the job, with Xpose beauty Glenda Gilson also rumoured to have been considered. Citing it as her "dream job", the fact that she's good pals with X Factor judge Louis Walsh would also be an added boost. "It'd be fantastic. I just keep dreaming and praying. That is my dream job because I love the X Factor and I spend so much time over there with Louis. To be working on it would just be a dream," she said.

The scramble for one of the best jobs in showbiz began in earnest earlier this month after it was confirmed that former Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq (35) would not be coming back to the series.

Konnie took over from previous presenter Holly Willoughby last year.

As for that Huq thing, her twisty up mouth and tombstone bottom teeth got right on my jugs. Glad she's gone.

Being a diva himself he'd be pretty quick to take the non-stars down a hundred pegs or two which is okay by me.

I'm not sure he would....I can only judge from what I've seen from his BB stuff and some of his tele appearances since. He may have changed from back then, of course.

They should bring back Kate Thornton - she was good

Crikey! dunt know why I am even commenting on this cos don't watch the show

But doesn't the judge have to have some modicum of knowledge regards talent ??

Just a thought

Extra Factor is the spin-off show, after the event so to speak. All he has to do is commiserate with the losers and tell them how good they nearly were.

Why? Is there positive discrimination on telly for the Irish, or something? Being mostly Irish myself, I'd like to know!

Never watch X Factor or any of its spin-offs, so I've no idea what Konnie Huq was like on it. All I do know is, she's an ex-Blue Peter clone and I don't know what Charlie Brooker sees in her.

Caroline Flack and Olly Murs have been confirmed as co-hosts on the new series of The Xtra Factor.

Earlier this week, The X Factor UK's judging lineup was revealed via the show's official Twitter feed, with Take That's Gary Barlow, Destiny's Child singer Kelly Rowland, N-Dubz's Tulisa Contostavlos and returning participant Louis Walsh sharing a panel in the first series not to feature Simon Cowell as a regular judge.

Tonight, a message was posted on the show's micro-blogging account, confirming that the I'm A Celebrity presenter and former X Factor finalist will helm ITV2's companion show, after former presenter Konnie Huq was axed earlier this year.

The message read: "@carolineflack1 and Olly Murs @ollyofficial confirmed as hosts on Xtra Factor! #xfactor (sic)"

Flack, who had originally ruled herself out of the role on the show because of her presenting job on I'm A Celebrity, took to her Twitter account to thank her fans for their messages of support.

"Thankyou all so much..en route to Birmingham now for first auditions...xx," she wrote.

"It does mean I'm sadly leaving the jungle. But had two fab years with the best team and only have incredible memories!! Xxxxx"

This year's first X Factor auditions begin in Birmingham tomorrow.

Mind you, the same could be said for him.
