Last year we went to Turkey on holiday and had a wonderful week. We met a lovely Swiss couple who we spent time with and enjoyed their company. Since then we've exchanged e mails (one or two).and Christmas cards.

We've booked again this year - same place - same time (we got a very good deal). i e mailed our folks in Switzerland and they e mailed back a couple of days later saying they've booked the same.

Whilst i'm really pleased - I'm a tad apprehensive - it's not like we were together 24/7 - it was nice to spend a bit of time with them.

What are your thoughts?

I think they go to Turkey every September anyway - and then they booked because we did - and in reply to Sproot who replied below (can't multi quote) I do think we are OK with taking time for ourselves. I'm fairly certain it wont be full on. The thing is - they are really early risers and saved us good sun loungers on the beach - it was quite nice to have someone to have lunch with. Thinking back - nobody was bothered if we didn't chat all the time - we all had books etc ...................I'm sure it'll be fine ............hope so anyway!

We meet up with a couple and their kids every year on holiday and have done for the last 8 years....we all do our own thing in the day but meet up for drinks at night although sometimes their boys will go fishing with my husband or one of mine will go out with them....although the kids are getting older now it was especially good when they were younger cos the kids had ready made mates on holiday as soon as we got there and were off doing their own thing....

In the bit between holidays though the only contact we have is the odd bit on Facebook and sick jokes by texts!

Croctacus

The thing is we are involved in a twinning association with a village in France (NOT SWINGERS) every easter (or thereabouts) the French come here or we go there. We are linked to a lovely family and it goes well ............the Twinning bit goes on for four days - this year we are extending and staying for longer (we know them wel - 10 years or more -l and they want to take us to their holiday home) - we are off in a couple of weeks and I'm really looking forward to it. I'm sure it can work well.

They sound fine, liking time on their own too.  I`m sure you`ll all get into your own stride after the first couple of days.

I hope it works out well for you all Soozy.

I doubt that they'll expect to spend any more time with you than they did last time Suzy...and if they do, then maybe just set your stall out from the beginning...unless it's one of those miles from anywhere all incl places could make it tricky! If so, look on the bright side, if you get a bit 'stuck' with them at least you know you like them, better than getting 'stuck' with someone else who you don't!

Very true! they're a lovely couple - we have a lot in common with them. I'm quite sure they are feeling the same - they won't want to be living in our pockets 24?7 i'm sure. it's just nice to have a friendly face to pass the time with.

I was like 'Oh?!' then 'Ohhhh' (and my eyebrows went back to normal)

I had to read it twice.

The villagers who are not involved in the twinning all go a bit nudge, nudge, wink, wink - it's a standing joke

where abouts in turkey are you going?

Thank you - I'm sure it will be OK. In fact I'm sure it'll be lovely - they like to do their own thing too - it's not like they'll have changed in the last year is it?

Belek.

To be fair I'd be nudging and winking too and I'm so glad I checked my spelling on this before I posted it.

The thing is .............I do worry for them.......................it can't be easy speaking English all the time to their 'holiday buddies' - when i'm in France I do try really hard to lighten the load with my limited French.

this couple do speak great English but their native tongue is German. We speak no German whatsoever!!! Maybe Cologne can give me some online tuition.

Anytime you like. I've had regular calls from my son and dil, asking what to say in certain situations. When I tell them, they decide to go back to asking: sprechen Sie Englisch.

I fully understand that ............i can't see that German is an easy language to master! I may PM you nearer the time for some key phrases - you'll have to give it to me phonetically though.

In all honesty - i really admire the way you communicate in English (very impressive) - just out of interest - do you think it first in German and then translate - or is it automatic?

i think you'll be okay, as long as you set the boundaries when you get there and say if you do or don't want to spend time together when you leave the complex.  It'll be nice to have some one you already kind of know to natter with by the pool.  i don't think you should be apprehensive, you're going to spend enough money getting there and it might be your one foreign holiday away this year, have in your head that you're going to spend it how you want, and you'll have a brill time.

no problem.

In the beginning, I translated everything obsessively, that included money too. Every square sausage I bought, I had in German and Marks first. Now it's completely the other way round, I really have to think about my own language. When I'm back home it takes a couple of days to be fluent again, over here, I have been known to send long letters to friends and getting replies such as, lovely letter, but can I have it in German next time please.
