I lose my MOT Insurance certificate. It always bloody happens. The day or 2 that my car is due for its MOT or Road Tax, I go through my documents and the one thing I can never find is the MOT Insurance certificate. This is the 3rd year in a row that I've had to actually order a new one

DISCLAIMER: I realise I said 'Every Year' even though its only the 3rd year to happen to me but...shut up!

Does anyone else have problems with important bits of paper?

I used to Rawky...    all the time...

now I have "the black box file"    DUN DUN DUUUUUUUN!

things in the black box file are important bits of paper that I will need... that I lose.       Car documents, passport, birth certificates, driving license, kinda thing.

its not infallible..   it does require me to actually put the documents in the file..   but I am getting better...

I can't handle lost document stress (& the tutting & knowing looks I get from family members when I fess up to having lost them)

I am the same - the red box file for car

the green box file for work

the purple one for important documents

the blue one for bills and utilities.

Its a bit haphazard cos they are all bunged in there but by and large it works for me

Nope, I've got a metal box file with all the sections labelled. Metal because in the awful event of a fire or something I would hope it would survive.

I have a cupboard full of stuff that no-one is even allowed to LOOK at incase they misplace something.  I know everything's in there until my OH goes in search of something when I'm not in and doesn't put everything back :@  Could kill him when he does that.

The most important documents like birth certs are still in my parents house.  My dad has every one of his kids and grandkids birth certs in his wardrobe and no-one dare even ask for them nevermind even go near them   Handy though because if we do need one of them he hounds us again until we give it back.

We've got a metal safe type box that has all stuff like that in....apparently it will withstand fire but we've not tried it out.

Ooo Croc, I forgot about that. I've got a small safe that I don't use. There's nothing in it

We've got a huge and ancient cast iron safe in the garage - last month Mr Woo broke the lock - God only knows how we're going to get into it. Fortunately we're that badly organised I don't think there was anything too valuable or important in it.

For 'important' stuff I have a huge cupboard with a very random, haphazard filing system - with four shops and a house it's not really good enough but we somehow stumble along!

Exactly what I do.    Everything is filed and alphabeticalised and put in lever arch files and labelled on the spine and put on shelves in the spare bedroom.  The OP is not an idiot though, many people don't file stuff properly so that they can find it again, it's just not something they think of... but they're not idiots either........people are just different.....I used to be the same, but as you get older and get more and more pissed off with not being able to find stuff, you get more methodical.  I have a job that requires a lot of admin and organsiastional skills too, so I am the same at home now and have been for about 10 years...

i have a cardboard box,  jammed  behind the  sitting room door, everything i will ever need is  in the  box.

after a while it becomes  filed in a  chronolgical order, old stuff at the bottom recent stuff on top.

i find this works very well.

i dont have pets or babies tho...

i will consider the  kitchen pile approach particularly if coverd in  jam as  is blizz's method,  would be  handy  for  stickin bits of associated  paperwork together.

or maybe i'm getting  a tad ocd and thats a step  too far  in  the organisational sense

no one's mentioned fridge magnets yet...

I keep my MOT certificate and insurance docs in the car, how very sensible of me... errrr  well no, just never got around to bringing it indoors from last time I taxed it many many months ago!

Everything else: stuffed in a kitchen drawer with no filing system and the 'overflow' in a box under the bed gathering fluff!
