Lack of resources was a contributory factor RR... plus poor lines of supply and communication....
Bernard Cornwell wrote a quadrilogy about the American Civil War, The Starbuck Chronicles. The husband has read them and says they are very good.

Contrary to popular belief it is not just a romance but an absolute fantastic account of the Deep South's version of events.
In short: the North had the greater resources, production and manpower. Short of a loss of nerve or a surprise knockout blow, the Union was always going to win a war of attrition.
Best line I know re the ACW:
"The North fought the civil war with one hand tied behind its back."
There is a programme on tonight on TG4 at 9.30pm salled Fag an Bealach about the American civil war and the Irish involvement....The buck who invented the Tricolour was a big part of it....
