i quite like getting those that say "you've won a free phone....." but before they can tell me how much its going to cost i let out a "whoopeeeeeeeee" and  tell my family- gabbering on - about how lucky i am' when they eventually get  a word in and say how much it will cost i act all indignant and say "you lied gary" (why is it always a gary with an asian accent?)  i can usually keep talking for at least ten minutes before THEY hang up

That's a good 'un!  I will try it next time lol.
What gets me is that I'm registered with TPS so shouldn't be getting any of these calls.
Seems like its not worth the bother of getting registered.

I'm with the TPS and you can make a complaint against them if you manage to get their telephone number and who they say they are.   You can also go to the Direct Marketing Association and make a complaint as well as this breaches their terms.

The way most firms get away with it is by using overseas call centres - there's nothing in place to stop these calls which is why so many companies use them

I had one of these calls from someone a few days ago claiming to be from Microsoft saying there were problems with my computer. I knew this was a scam so told him that I was not going to taken in by criminal confidence tricksters and had warned people about this scam on this forum back in November.

The Guardian did an expose on this scam some time ago and reported:
The Guardian has learned from a source that the call centres have operating since 2008 out of the Indian city of Kolkata, and are run by a man from Kota, Rajasthan.

I get many calls from outfits claiming to be carrying out surveys - that's just their way of getting over the data protection act - unscruplous cold callers and I would never do business with them because they use deception. But these are in a different category from the Microsoft one which is clearly criminal in intent and being based abroad isn't worried about TPS and data protection laws.

Eventually Interpol will pounce on him and his gang, and the sooner the better.

I enquired about registering with them Aquarius but it was bit pricey. Sorry to hear you might have wasted your money. Stick with  "I`m recording your call" They don`t call back.

I registered for TPS and it was free and very easy.

If I do get calls, I just have to mention TPS and they apologise and hang up, sharpish.
I must say, I've had very few nuisance calls since.

Apart from those male admirers, but I get used to it...

I might register then Blizzie, although my "!`m recording your call" works, it doesn`t stop new companies calling.
I get two every day at 9am and 11am and they hang up. Hoping I`m going to call them back possibly - on a premium number, no doubt.  It`s darned annoying.

I had one of those recently. He asked if my computer was on, and he would get me to run through the system and show up any errors.
 Errrrr.... No thanks. Byeeeee!

Another one I had was in reference to my recent "accident". Accident? What accident? And even if I had recently had an accident, how the heck would they know about it. Byeeeee!
TPS works... but only to a certain extent.

Scotty, we're TPS registered and it costs us nothing. We hardly ever get any of these calls. Although, Mr Fluffy Thing answers most of the time the phone rings. Maybe he's hiding it from me!
