I won't miss him.  His last album was retreading that whole Motown pastiche thing that worked for him so well in the 80s.  The thing is, why bother with pastiches when you can download the superior originals in a few clicks of a mouse?

His statement smacks a bit of self pitying.

I don't know that the music industry's that much different to what it was in his heyday.  I suppose people like their lightweight white boy soul singers to look like male models, have piercings and tats these days as opposed to being balding, chubby, middle aged blokes with ponytails and their jacket sleeves rolled up, as it was in his day.

I was going to say good post, but i have been singing Sussudio in my head the last few minutes, and have a feeling it will continue.

He's a bit of prat, granted (the fax thing), but I can never quite get the complete turnaround fashion can bring to guys like him.    'back in the day' Genesis were huge - a 'serious' group and now it's laughable to even suggest it in some way.     Same with U2 an Bono - imo seriously talented and huge artists - now, not cool (again Bono is so far up his own arse he thinks he's God - but I'm only talking about the music).     i do agree about what PC's done since Susudio mind.

EDIT   I'd forgotten about the Motown thing.....    I agree it's probs time for him to go, but i admit to having vinyl copies of In the air tonight and No Jacket Required so won't take away from him what he did in the past.

Is it still ok to like Peter Gabriel?

wasn't a "fashion" thing  with Phil Collins for me, I just have a ( long-standing!) aversion to him Not sure why, exactly, he has written some gorgeous songs. Maybe my mum made me wear a scratchy haun-knitted cardigan he'd modelled on a knitting pattern or something

Ah.. so it IS a fashion thing!          Yeah, I can go with that - I was just making a general point about 'how the mighty have fallen' when it comes to what were once 'super groups'      Of course, he never lived up to old Pete, but that's a whole other debate.

Ah Peter Gabriel! One goes back to York in the early seventies. We were really looking forward to seeing Genesis, supported by Capability Brown.(One of us was a stately home garden fanatic) The crowd were excited. Gabriel stopped the music halfway through the first song and suggested that if anyone wanted to make a noise then they should come up and do it on the stage and then **** off. Don't know what he expected but several punters got up. The entire road crew appeared as a mate of mine  shouted, "That's intimidation! **** off back home yer public school ****.
I hadn't realised that they were so far up their own bottoms, and whilst I continued buying their product for the music, I realised that, in those days, apart from Phil Collins they were a bunch of shithouses.
