when did that come out PeterCat, I haven't heard of it... sounds like a dark fantasy film ?
It came out in 1989. There's more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Sangre

Its a crap book, and an even worse film

I don't think Baz (the other half of your exclusive movie clique) would agree with you on that one! If you like 'dark' try Dead Man's Shoes. It's fantastic. It's hard to describe the plot without giving too much away. Check out a few reviews it's well worth it.

One of the best films in recent years for me is MOON, a brilliant old-school science fiction tale:

And another film with the same leading actor - LAWN DOGS(don't let Mischa Barton put you off, she is only a fledgling actress here and not as annoying, lol):

I've heard of Moon, Katerina, I must try to see it. I love Sam Rockwell, he's done some unusual films.

YES! I agree. Very good film, about a Stasi officer with a heart.
It's brilliant isn't it.  I never thought that's how it would go and the ending is just so so sweet and subtle.

I have a friend who lived in East Germany and I remember her telling me some scary stories about the Stasi.  It's so hard to believe it was all going on right up until the late 80s!

Nosey Rosie, I love One hour photo too.   Robin Williams is just brilliant in it.

Going back to the OP's post:  may I recommend 'The Human Centipede'  It's a really grotesque and rather sick horror/thriller.

I won't give anything away, but if you like to be shocked and don't mind watching the odd disgusting horror, then this is for you: Go into www.imdb.com and just type in 'The Human Centipede,' and see for yourself if it's something you would want to watch.  It's about a German scientist who experiments on some people he kidnaps.  That's all I will say.

Oh By the way: it's NOT FOR KIDS, so don't let anyone under 17/18 watch it.

Life is Beautiful. which makes me laugh and cry everytime I see it. It's Italian with subtitles.

Dog Soldiers just because I love the dialogue

Digging to China - I think it's called. Offbeat Kevin Bacon film in which he plays a guy with learning difficulties.
Looking through some of the other suggestions here has made me realise just how much I love Kevin Bacon's films and performances. I think he's very underated

Wooahhh... I know what the human centipede is about Sparkles . I don't think I'd have the courage to watch it though. It is literally, your worst nightmare. Just thinking about it gives me the collywobbles!!!

Not sure if it was ever a big hit but it's one of my fave films. Based on a true story too - very sad.

Yes Soozy, I remember that. It came out just after a relative of mine had a brain injury... which made it even more sad. What a poignant story. Oliver Sacks also wrote a book " The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat"...  a collection of case histories of his patients, which I would recommend too.

Yes Temps, you're exactly right, the ending is sweet and subtle. Strange that you'd use those words for a film about such a dark topic, but its right! A dark topic but a heartwarming film.

I love films like that - the gorier and more disturbing the better for me.

"Freaks" is a wee bit sad in a way because it was real life "freaks"  (not a nice word to use) that were in the film.

The sentiment behind it is moving though.

It's very rarely shown on TV - in fact I think it was banned until the eighties?

At times quite disturbing but a great story.

THE CASTLE is a totally excellent film I would recommend. It's a bit old now but a classic. Loosely based on the true story of a family who fought a compulsory purchase order on their land when the airport wanted to extend the runway, I can appreciate that sounds boring as hell but it's told with great humour and is just a totally feel good film. Big thumbs up from me.
