Bah! They were saying this morning they were the real ones but you'd be able to see them from further away than usual cos of the solar flares... well, thats what I though they said, I was still waking up I don't feel as disappointed I'm not in the Norf now

The ones we see in Scotland ARE the real ones. If they see any in Europe then they may well be slightly different in nature to those we see from the North of Scotland as most of Europe is south of Scotland.
The solar flare is a lot bigger than usual so it is expected that the 'Northern Lights' will be visible (if skies are clear) further south than usual Their nature is partly due to the amount of atmosphere they encounter. so the further south you are what you see is likely to be slightly different to the 'TRUE' Northern Lights.

And yes, it was fairly overcast here as well. It is possible there was a slight extra 'glow' in the sky, but it was sufficiently overcast that the 'glow' may just have been wishful thinking!
