Two horses at today's race meeting at Newbury have died in very mysterious circumstances before the first race was due to take place. They were in the paddock when this happened. There is speculation that they were electrocuted, but I hear on the radio that there is no knowledge of underground electric cabling in that area. The only work done there recently was routine drainage.

The meeting has been abandoned.

BBC article The article includes a photograph showing tarpaulins which have been placed over the horses so that they are not visible.

I have heard of nothing like it before.
I think I may have Brisket, but it.s such a vague thing that I;m not sure if it's a REAL event or a fictional story.
You may have be thinking of a Dick Francis book.

I hate horse racing with a passion and have demonstrated against it in the past. Amazing that people are up in arms about horses dying before a race but no one seems to care about them dying during races, or after races or the other appalling injuries and abuse they suffer day after day.
That's not a dig against anyone in this forum btw just a comment about the hypocrisy of the horse racing fraternity in general

Thanks El Loro, I did see the thread at the time but didn't contribute because it makes me so angry. I have demonstrated outside both Aintree and Cheltenham on many occasions in the past and had very unpleasant experiences with the people who were attending the meetings.
I was reluctant to contribute to this thread tbh but as I said, my comments weren't a dig at anyone on here but more about the trainers/owners/jockeys etc who are all 'so upset' about this.
Bunch of hypocrits.

Have to agree with this. I think it's a horrific "sport".

I was very sad to hear about the poor horses losing their lives today.
Will be interesting to see what the investigation uncovers.
