He's been good at keeping the talks going, I lived in Nigeria in the middle of the90s and he was revered as having rescued Africa. Yes he is an autocrat, but I don't think he is in the league of Mugabe etc. He needs to go to let somebody else understand Egyptean mentality and people. It's a great and ancient country and deserves better.

Don't like Mubarak much, but on the other hand I'm worried that Egypt may get an extreme Islamic government to replace him. To be honest, I don't know enough about the situation there to comment further.
Egyptian!
Tunisia set the pace. It's the 'in' thing in that part of the world. I'm currently organising an initially peaceful demo which will end in the brutal assassination of The Thicko Twins (Cameron and Clegg). I've only got me so far though...
One remembers the professor at a particular university
..... When on being asked to comment on Iraq's invasion of Kuwait said "the situation has me puzzled!"
Thanks zazz, I'm reverting to the German spelling and need to be pulled up.
Prom, that reminds me of Citizen Smith.
Maybe Joe, times are a bit strange,

I believe him and his family are now in the UK? A time when we need more unrest in the Far East?

Yep, he was crap at starting revolutions too
I agree with Peter Cat..... Murbarak may not be perfect, but the last thing the Middle East needs is more radicalism....
He meant it from the heart though.
Citizen Smith that is.

I don't think religious zealots are waiting in the wings. The American's relative taciturn-ness (sorry) would appear to back this up. They reckon a western friendly regime will be next. They'd be pissing their pants if they thought fundamentalists of an unfriendly nature were up next.
Mubarak is doomed.

I don't know howitt'll go cologne.
But if it's going to escalate, it's going to be be in the mdidle east...

That cat who used to work for specsavers but is now in charge in Syria could be next.
Deman, that's my worry. He's typically carp when it comes to home economics, but he is good at keeping the diplomacy going in that part of the world.

In all honesty this is how I reckon it will go. There will bea revolution (or at least change) of sorts. Everyone will shout, "Hurrah!! Everything's going to be bloody brilliant!" Mucho grins all around.
A few years down the line, everyone will say, "Mmmm, it's 'better' but brilliant might be pushing it". And so it goes.

If you want more likely seats of mayhem then look to Iran.
I'm listening to Radio 5live and they voice my opinion that he is b*ggered if he brings in the military and he's b*ggered if he doesn't. It just doesn't seem quite right because he has not been in the league of other African leaders who where just out for their own.
R5 suggesting that the USA are pulling the strings of the Egyptian army.
Great entertainment listening to the confused opinions of Charlie Wolf!

To digress...
My mate has got a new Czech girlfriend.
Takes her hours to hoover the house though. Turns out she's a Slovak.

Bottom line, US are not scared of who's next. Ergo their, "We suggest the President listen to the legitimate concerns of the protestors", line. No fear. He's fugged.
Oh, I agree Joe, it is quite fascinating, but I still go back to the nineties and my own experience over there. He was good at being an ambassador for Africa. I know that doesn't make it better for the Egyptian people, but the country would have been in much deeper poo with somebody like Mugabe or any of the other African Dictators who had not a clue, but just took over.
Antilope, I think the USA would like him to stay because he's been a great advocat of western politics and has been good in negotiation between Israel and Palestine.

By good I take it you mean relatively compliant?
The US may, given the choice, prefer him to stay, but I don't think they're too concerned about who is waiting in the wings. I could be wrong but I don't think this is Tehran '79 (or whenever it was) all over again.

Tehran 79 doen' t bear thinking about.
Deman, I remember that like it was yesterday. When that weirdo got off the plane in Tehran, my heart sank, mind you that was at the same time as Thatcher won the election, Reagon was President in America and I was just about to move over here from a fairly prosperous country (pregnant and with a 2 year old darling girl).
