Absolutely agree Issy,this is one thing that really get's to me.

I know that Velvet...but can you imagine what good that money could do in the country..

It just seems obscene that when people are having benefits cut, people are facing losing their houses and jobs, these footballers seem to be living the life of Riley  



It is all wrong.

There's no sense to it Lee -  I am trying to see the justification  but I can't. Particularly in this current climate.

I had *words* with ardent football fans over this very thing Issy,imo it is unjustifiable ,the argument offered was football players are gifted.

They may well be and yes they may well deserve to be well paid.
But why do they need £80k a week and more?

It's market forces...of course no footballer is really worth that much any more than an actor is worth 15 million or whatever for 3 months work making a film....but if they are generating more than substantial incomes to their bosses then to that boss its a worthwhile investment.

When they start getting paid out of taxpayers money then everyone has a right to moan, until then its up to their employers who pay them what they think they are worth.

Neurosurgeons work in the private sector too, so I'd imagine their earnings far exceed 71k. My one only did 2.5 days NHS a week and the rest at his private practice.

I agree footballers are paid far to much but like croc said it is up to their employers and they do have a short career life, brain surgeons or any surgeon may be on high salary but in my opinion deserved, also lets not forget these high earners no matter which job they do are paying an awful lot of it back to the government in tax.

Except they're not. Most clubs run at a huge loss and still insist on paying crazy money to buy players then pay them obscene wages just to keep up with the Joneses. There are very few clubs who are self financing.

 My team (Chelsea) have just spent 70 million on two players, the money came from our rich owner who doesn't care if the club loses money or not. If he walks out next week Chelsea are in all kinds of trouble. That's how football clubs go under and I think the way players and their agents are becoming increasingly greedy and demanding outrageous amounts even when they don't perform half the time we'll have a situation in the near future where either the government steps in and orders clubs to live within their means or a lot of top tier clubs are going to go under and to be honest, they bloody deserve it. No other industry is allowed to operate under the weight of such staggering amounts of debt.

No it's not. Clubs generate massive revenue and can afford to pay players huge amounts. The problems occur when they are paying far more than they're bringing in. It's going to self implode at some point.

I am comparing it morally.. I know in cold hard cash terms it cannot be compared.

It doesn't matter where the money comes from:  footballers are not worth the multiple millions of pounds that they get.  Someone somewhere is having to suffer for the obscene amounts of money they get.  What about the fact that the match tickets and season tickets are so expensive that mere mortals can hardly afford to go now?  It used to be a working class sport, but now the working classes cannot afford it, because of people like Ronaldo being paid ridiculous amounts of money like 80 million pounds! 

Footballers do NOT deserve their wage  IMO.  NOBODY, but NOBODY deserves THAT amount of money.  And certainly not jumped-up little upstarts like football players!

Thanks Issy.    Everyone is entitled to a view of course, but how can anyone be worth that much?  And I actually really dislike some footie players.  Not all of them, but some.

The more money that creeps into anything, the more it is open to corruption.
This certainly applies to sport.
Temptation becomes irresistable to many.
I firmly believe that football is badly managed.
I also believe that the vast amounts of money involved will be its downfall.
All that money makes it open to too many influences. It is not secure, and it will crumble.
(Football as we know it, that is.)

What makes me laugh is at one time, a lot of people said we were silly to pay 15 mill for Alan Shearer  

How can these Football clubs pay out such obscene amounts of money for new players when the clubs are in the red.

Excellent point smarting buttocks.  And I agree with you Issy:  it's insane, the amount that footballers are paid.  I can't see the justification in it.  But then again, you could also say that film stars are not worthy of their £25 million to £40 million that they get, because if they weren't paid so much, it would be cheaper to get into the cinema.  Then again, the actors that are paid a few tens of millions are usually ones who have been doing it for 15-20 years or more, and have earned their stripes so to speak.   So I would say that actors probably are worth their salary more than football players. 

A few footballers who have gotten 40, 50 million plus, are really young, and not worth it in my opinion.  But if the football clubs are paying it, they're going to take it aren't they?  I would.   On the whole though, I agree that there is no way that footballers are worth the money.  They are worthy of being paid a decent amount (SOME of them,) but nowhere near what they get.  I mean is ROONEY really worth his salary?  Don't make me laugh!
