For some reason as soon as January hits I tend to think about summer holidays and am tryin to convince myself this year not to bother going abroad but myself doesn't seem to want to listen!

Last year we spent 3 days in my brother in laws old beat out caravan near the beach where it rained most of the time and was freezing.  We spent the time playing family games and having a drink at night while playing more games and generally just spending time with each other.  The caravan cost us nothing and we only spent on food and drink whilst there.  I enjoyed it and the kids didn't fight too much.

Then we went to Salut in September which cost a lot more....new passports, clothes, all the bits and pieces needed for a foreign holiday and we couldn't wait to get there but.....it was a huge let down. Everything was overpriced, they put us in a one bedroom/living space with a small bathroom and the kids were fighting non stop!  They only wanted to sit in the pool and getting them to walk round the town was a nightmare.  We had bought theme park tickets before we went there and they were a waste of money.

But now january is here I'm wondering wether to give going abroad another chance or just go back to the beat out caravan and hope the sun blesses us with an appearance!

What are your plans for this year?

I'm considering offering to help the bro in law do up the caravan properly would that be rude?  It's run down and old fashioned but could be fixed up easily but they don't seem bothered by it.  Nothing major....just cleaning up the outside and getting rid of the bushes that the bees seem to love but meaning we can't eat outside coz there are loads of bees around.  Oh and maybe getting the bathroom fixed up coz it's in need of it.  That might be rude though....they let us use it for free and I'd be more or less saying it wasn't good enough when it is but it could be great with a few wee tweaks.

My poor husband is trying to book something right now ... oh the stress

We want Spain, villa, preferably own pool but willing to share, has to be end of July or in August, near a town so that daughter and her friend can be self sufficient, but not too near other people.

He is not a happy man at the moment, trying to fulfil these impossible criteria

Booked ours yesterday...a week in Pembrokeshire...my fave place on earth (other than our bed!!). Gorgeous cottage with log burner and all that...can't wait. Tis our dream to live there in the future and I am determined it will happen! We have never taken the kids abroad and doubt we will cos there is so much to see here...plus MrB has a fear of flying!!! We used to caravan it and now we stay in cottages as a rule. Can't imagine having any other sort of holiday!

My kids school has done away with trips out so they don't even get that! Luckily we live near enough to a seaside town (which is where the caravan is) that it's easy enough to get there for a few quid of petrol but the kids seem to think they aren't actually gettin a holiday just because we haven't got on a plane!   Cheeky sods!

I get what you mean. my daughter say's she hasn't been on holiday casuse it was school related , the photos say otherwise  plus having too buy her a passport and getting a new birth cert, clothes and spending money the last trip cost me about ÂĢ500, we have a caravan in the family but it's in Skeggy and we've done that place too death and it's not the same when your child is 16 and not 6
