I bought a packet last year on a flight to Spain, but never tried them. Tomorrow I am off on a long haul which includes a stop over. Has anyone tried them? Do they really stop the craving?

Is it the ones with the cartridges?
They taste faintly fishy.
Mr L got some from his GP, you suck on it and get a hit of nicotine, it's ok, but then something hits you, an after-taste that is like cat food. It's odd.
Or is it one of those other ones, the newer kind?

Quite right! I've been on nicorette gum for twenty years!
Thank you all.
Leccy I actually bought them on a plane. I just tried one, they seemed to work for 5 minutes until I walked in to the kitchen where my real cigs are and I lit up
To be honest, I never crave a cigarette when I fly, mainly because I am usually in panic mode. I'm more concerned about when I get to Toronto and have to wait for my connecting flight.

Really? Does the gun keep you THAT addicted?
My mum was the same. Gave up smoking but 6 years later was still on the gum when she got lung cancer and died.

Sorry to hear this Croc. I myself am happy smoking and drinking and feel that when your time comes you have enjoyed it to the full.

free this and that,
So do you not eat anything that is fat free?I wasn't talking about quitting, I was asking if the smokeless cigarettes worked.

Are you addicted to this now? Even these nicotine substitutes are supposed to be a short term fix, not an addiction.

Yeah that's me, when I know I can't smoke, I'm fine, but when I know there is an opportunity too, I want to. Reference:

Well you've just put me off trying to use gum to give up.
Deep down I do want to stop. I have many reasons why at the minute it's not a good time. I refuse to use the word BUT.

Cinds, they work if you think they work for you. Its all in the mind with quitting, if you think something works then it works for you. Scientific studies may show these things work, but it is up to the individual to believe they work. Its a matter of mind over matter.

I tried all sorts to give up, gum , patches the lot. When I finally did it I did it (and so did my husband) cold turkey and it was pretty easy. I think then was just the right time and when we'd tried before it hadn't been.
Jonesy, I totally agree with what you have just said.
All I was pointing out was the reason I was asking about them wasn't about me quitting at this time, it was about whether they will work for me on my journey tomorrow.

Give them a try Cinds and see what you think. Report back to us on what you think, and maybe some on here will try them or disregard them. You are the forums guinea pig for these false fags. Good luck .

I'm not bothered about the smoking on the flight, I have nytol to knock me out for that, it's the sitting in the next airport after 8 hours of not smoking that is concerning me.
I'll find a coffee shop.
Night all, and thanks, I think.

that would be my solution too.have a fab time cinds xx
I always refuse coffee / tea on long haul flights as it would make me crave a ciggie more....Last time I went to New York,May last year, our flight was delayed due to the ash cloud ,I was crawling the walls in Dublin airport and asked if I could go back outside to have a quick smoke, because I'd cleared US immigration apparently I was on what was classed as US soil so if I'd left that departure lounge my visa became null and void. When I finally did arrive in JFK,over 12 hours later, cleared US customs and got my luggage I ran like to wind to get out for a smoke.

Leccy! I'm the same.
I'm fine when I know I can't have one on the flight, but when you're waiting for your luggage and then helpfully keep reminding you that you can't smoke in the airport, I go a bit mad.
Mr Blizz usually suggests I go outside and he waits for the luggage!

The point about the gum isn't that it removes your addiction - only you can do that over time. The gum is just a lot less harmful than smoking, and is also easier to give up / cut down on. However, you still have to have the will to escape your addiction in the first place. And yes, I do speak from experience.
I tried to give up smoking several times over 20 years, but I was only successful when I took the decision to really give up, mainly because I was worried about my health. As for nicotine aids, I'd suggest trying different ones till you find the one which suits you. For me the inhaler thing worked best, but other people I know have given up using gum or patches.

I used them last time I gave up.....definitely take the edge off imo, so, worth a try?......I'm okay on a long journey until the moment I think it's a good idea to have a drink, then I really, really want a ciggie..... I always take a nicotine patch in case of emergencies!
