I'm presuming quite a few of you have got one on here. How good are they? I'm eating far too many ready meals and have decided I really need to start eating properly and was thinking of doing soups and stews with proper veg, so that would be a start. All opinions welcome

I recently got one and am still experimenting. I've done basic beef casseroles (a couple with red wine) which were quite nice - also chicken thighs in a sachet of schwartz slow cooker sauce (powder form). TBH - I'm not a huge fan of casseroles and stews but my husband has enjoyed everything so far.
Looking forward to some ideas from others on here.
Oh yeah I also did a gammon in coca cola at Christmas - turned out well.
Basically you just chuck everything in with a bit of stock.

I use mine 2/3 times a week .
I take recipes from The Ultimate Slow Cooker Cookbook by Cara Hobday.
Latest meal I cooked was Chinese beef with Green Peppers and black bean sauce .I served it with noodles.
I love the Piripiri chicken recipe.
A great soup is Butternut Squash and chorizo soup.

Sounds ok Soozy. I think I might have to trawl the net tomorrow and see what there is. I only need a small one as it's only for me
At the minute I'm coming in from work about 5-5.30 and not eating untill about 7ish by the time i've done stuff in the house and then can't be arsed to cook a meal so I put something in the michaelwave or the oven and I know this is wrong.

I use mine occasionally. Cooks food v. nicely, although I like to seal the meat in a frying pan sometimes (depending on what I'm cooking). My son has even cooked lamb chops in his. Apparently they come out nicely browned and he's still alive to tell the tale.
It'd be ideal for you Sprout. Just sling it all in the pot in the morning and you'll come home to a ready cooked meal after work. If you're short on time in the morning either prep the veg the night before or buy the ready diced.

I'm starting to make more soup, but if your away for the day with work etc, then slow cookers are ideal, and so welcoming when you get home.
You have to ask Trollop about Mrs.Trollop's crock pot...
Oh and someone gave me a George Foreman grill as a Christmas present! are they any good or shall I just shove it to the back of the cupboard.

Depends whether you've got one of the newer models, which I presume is the case. You'll have removable plates that can be cleaned in the sink/dishwasher. I've just thrown an old one out coz I couldn't be bothered with cleaning it, but it seemed to be good for what I wanted it for
They vary in sizes, Sprout and you don't have to fill 'em right up to the top anyway!
Also, you could cook enough for 2 or 3 evening meals and freeze a couple of them?

I'm sure my cooker has a sensor on it and turns itself to 'keep warm' once the food is cooked.

I never thought of that Cosmo right, I'm going looking for one tomorrow
I've just checked; mine's a Breville. Wasn't expensive as I wasn't sure that I'd use or like it. I doubt it was much more than 20 quid.

It`s good katty, does great chops,steaks etc but the grease catcher tray is far too small. My work top was floating. I put a bigger plastic tray under it..or you can just use a plate. It tilts it back slightly but it still works fine.

Oh and watch the heat guide katty. I found it better on a bit of a lower temperature. More tender than the higher heat.
It`s great for peppers, onions etc too. They come out that slightly burnt way. Tasty.

Mr summer has not 1, not 2 but THREE slow cookers he loves them & recommends them to everyone!
Me, well, I just recommend eating the food that someone cooks in a slow cooker cos it's delicious
I love my slow cooker. Stews, casseroles, curries, chicken wings and ribs all yummy.
Leg of lamb in the slow cooker (best cooked from frozen), meat just slides off the bone *drools*
Its great to have something ready to eat after a long day at work

Thanks everyone for your input. I went in Argos today and had a look at a 3.5 litre one and it looked too big for just one, but as someone suggested, I could do extra and freeze I've seen this one on Amazon and got an E-Gift voucher for my birthday yesterday so won't cost me anything

You should go for it sprout they are really useful. I love mine. You can find so many recipes online and it's amazing what you can cook in them.
