Our council is kinda crap. We have a grey bin for ordinary rubbish, a blue one for paper (alternate weeks) and a brown one for garden stuff. Nothing for glass, plastic or tin. We're still about top of the 'league' for recycling though which I find pretty amazing.
we have a weekly rubbish collection here.... the recyclables & garden are fortnightly but the household waste is every friday without fail....

Having not had a bin collection for weeks, the bin men called on Tuesday our normal collection day and got rid of the pile of rubbish.
Today they called again but there's no rubbish to collect??? More overtime I suspect

so now WE have to dispose of the whole lot...what a treat. We rang the coucil and told them we had taken out the non-recyclable stuff but were informed that the whole lot was contaminated as was our problem. Fuming doesn't even cover it.
pfft, sack that off, just stick the same lot back out next time for collection.... how will they know? Reference:
I quite like the German way. Large community bins discreetly hedged off.
I live in a block of flats and ours are like that... the normal ones are ok, bin cupboard near the block... the recycling bins are right in the corner of the car park so you have to go traipsing across with your recycling every time you want to put something in. Oh, and they're not tastefully hidden either, a row of huge purple bins stood in the car park
I have a green bin for normal rubbish that gets emptied every 2 wks (food etc) and every other week the recycling and garden bin get done, in the summer the food bin is a nightmare
