Cheryl Cole could need subtitles for US audiences to understand her when she records the American version of The X Factor, it has been claimed.

A poll from London-based language firm Today Translation put the Newcastle-born singer as the celebrity fourth most in need of subtitling for those abroad, behind Liverpudlian footballer Wayne Rooney, his Glaswegian manager Alex Ferguson and fellow Scot Susan Boyle.

The survey of 226 linguists was conducted the day after it was reported that Cole had been hired for the US port of the reality talent contest. It has previously been claimed that Cole will retain her Geordie accent if she goes abroad.

MD of Today Translations Jurga Zilinskiene said: "We think that Americans will love Cheryl Cole as much as Brits do. But we know that even many Brits have trouble understanding Geordie accents.

"We also wanted to know whether our linguists thought that Cheryl Cole might need subtitles when she becomes a judge on the US version of The X Factor."

interesting you call her an idiot and an airhead when your main contribution to this site is 'hello everyone I am drunk again sorry heh heh'. I think we know who the idiot is here.

I don't have any problem at all understanding anything she says by the way, and no I'm not a geordie.

Don't mind the accent... I always bloody fall for it when I ring up the bank and im speaking to a geordie woman, I go from pissed off dialing the numbers and then quite calm when putting the phone down after hearing the soft geordie voice

Mind you... some of the crap she comes out with on x factor just takes the piss.

"You absolutely smashed that"

Don't get me started on what she said about The Beatles either

My sister in law is from Whitley Bay Newcastle ................when I first met her I really and truly struggled to understand her as her accent was so thick.

When she married and moved further South (Lincolnshire) no one could understand her and she freely admits that she had to change the way she spoke. It really must have been uncomfortable and not at all easy. That was thirty years ago ..................however - when her family visit she reverts back in an instant - so funny to see but I can't imagine how difficult it must have been for her.

I don't understand the comment that Cheryl Cole with 'retain' her accent.  surely if you have an accent of any kind, it's not something you switch on and off to suit the circumstances?  You either have a particular accent or you don't    My accent never changes, no matter where I am or who I'm talking to.

Quite a lot of people lose their accent when the move to a different area... sometimes partially, sometimes fully. I don't think its a concious decision most of the time, but if you have a strong accent you do have to alter it so people can understand you - especially a Northern accent in the sarf My accent is different when I'm talking to people at work/the south generally than when I'm talking to my parents/other Top Rightaz

Mind you, a lot of people do try to lose a regional accent cos they think it makes them sound better, or that they will be understood easier - Sting, I'm looking at you

My Boyfriend is from a different are than me and they have  a slightly different pronunciation of some words than me and I find that when I am with him I talk like him but when I am at home I don't (apart from the occasional word)

That annoys me when people slag Nadine Coyle, some people are more susceptible at picking up accents than other, theres plenty of celebs that it has happened to; John Barrowman, CZJ etc.
