Ok, so I may be in a minority here when it comes to this subject but just thought I would ask.

Do you play video/computer games? If so do you ever take notice of the music involved with these games or is just something you've never thought nor really cared about?

Well I do. Like Film Music I find Game Music can be very empowering and memorable. It certainly has come a long way over the years. So I thought I would share some of my favourite pieces with and you can share with me. It will be like a sharing thing thats very sharing

Anywho, here are a selection of some of my favourites:

Super Mario Galaxy, Wii - Good Egg Galaxy

Donkey Kong Country 2, SNES - Stickerbush Symphony

Super Smash Bros Brawl, Wii - Stickerbush Symphony REMIX

Streets of Rage 2, Mega Drive - Good Ending

Awww man, I'm such a geek.

All the talk of the Cocteau Twins on other threads has been giving me flashbacks, so I hope you forgive me for leaping in here.

Way, way back in the early days of what is now laughingly caused the British computing industry (although it wasn't always laughed-at at the time - some took it very seriously indeed), the company "Automata" revolutionized the whole idea of what was possible regarding computer game music by turning out "Deus Ex Machina" - a sort of computer-game opera. Back in those days (we're talking ZX Spectrum, remember), you had to load a program from an audio tape. With DEM, you then flipped the tape over for an audio recording which you then synced with the game. This allowed them to use the real voices of the likes of Jon Pertwee, Frankie Howerd and Ian Dury.

Anyway, the upshot of all that is this - probably the most obscure and unusual Ian Dury performance ever:

Strictly speaking, this breaks Rawky's ban on "known songs stuck onto games", but I feel duty-bound to post it anyway, not least because it totally revolutionized the computer game industry at the time. What Matthew Smith did (i.e. provide continuous music while the game was running) was previously thought impossible on the ZX Spectrum and similar computers.

Oh, and keep 'em peeled for a cameo appearance by yours-truly near the end...

Dear Lord Eugene!! I could only listen to about 10 seconds of that......sorry
Do you mean the "Blue Danube" intro, or the "In the hall of the mountain king" background music?

I'd definitely agree that the intro is painful to listen to - it rather encouraged you to get quickly into the game!

I never had any problems with the background music though, but you've got to remember that, as I said earlier, it was a novelty at the time. Allowing for the almost unimaginable advances in technology since then, it's still pretty sophisticated - it even changes key as you lose lives!

For Jet Set Willy", they used "If I were a rich man" (I'll spare you that one...)
