Can you get a test to have Diabetes and it is wrong, or another test at a later date shows negative, when a first one was positive?

I can't believe my daughter has been told she has this, she is so young ,  Im devastated.   You think as a parent you wouldn't expect to have these illness's before your children. I am now working my way through the types of Diabetes, and reading up on it.

Did your daughter have the 4 hour blood test where she had to drink the sweet liquid? Was she fasting before the test

Nope, not that i was told. But im sure she had not had anything to eat for ages before. She is to get another one. Im sure your diet intake had much to do with it. As well as being hereditary, of which it is not in our family.

has she had any other symptoms recently - consistently thirsty and then obviously drinking - poor eye sight ??

I dont know what tests they do in mild cases - my OH had all above symptoms and was diagnosed on just one normal blood test done in the docs surgery

Diabetes can effect all ages Evelyn and comes in different forms - tablet - diet - insulin controlled

From what I understand, though not an expert, the only way to correctly diagnose it is to do the 4 hour glucose tolerance test.  The 4 hour test is done by fasting before drinking the liquid.  If she had just had a blood sugar test, that would have been affected by eating anything before the test.

Both types can occur in any age.  Once you know which type she has you will be better prepared for the management of the condition.

Sorry to hear about your daughters diagnosis

My niece was diagnosed with Type 1 aged 10  after a short period of feeling under the weather.  She coped very well with it.  Has always done her own injections and manages her intake of food.  If she has some sweets etc she always makes sure she injects for it.

Pengy Witchy  Sorry Evelyn don't know much about diabetes but have a hug

Dame_Ann_average  Eve Don't know much about it, only to say my granddaughter was checked and they told us she had it, a week later she had the fast test and couldn't eat or drink from midnight the night before and her results were perfectly normal.
Im hoping its the same. I am trying not to come down to hard on her diet lifestyle. I'd prefer to use the suggested options rather than the you must do this.. option lol

Ugh... don't remind me. I still have not got myself tested for it, 19 years old, tired and drinking pop likes theres no tomorrow I just can't be bothered dealing with it all.
I get like that sometimes. I just don't want the bother of the worry. Sometimes having it in your mind for however long beforehand is harder to deal with than the actual event i find. *Hug*

Quite often there are no symptoms....I got collared for a routine blood test when i was at the doctors for something completely unrelated ( a bloody allergy) and the result came back with a sky high glucose level....it seems I have fat bird diabetes (and I'm not overweight). my doctor didn't start me on the medication straight away and I had a couple of months to try and control it with diet and exercise and though it has improved, not enough to avoid the medication.  To say it has pissed me off is an understatement...having cancer was easier cos this means a change of lifestyle (and the eating habits of a lifetime).  But given that my dad and older brother developed it at a similar age, its probably that i was never going to avoid getting it.
