Now I ponder on it, I realise that Yellow Pages and local free papers are all businesses advertising themselves, which is not necessarily a good recommendation.

I go on word of mouth and friend's recommendations.

I go on friends recommendation, or i do 'do it myself' Im dead handy with the DIY when i can be bothered. I can decorate, tile floors, fit sinks, put up coving. Mitred edges dont scare me

Anyone watch that show *cowboy builders* on Ch5, it astounds me how much money people pay up front, 1 woman was having a new kitchen and she paid about 20 grand up front and before the ktchen was even started, the builder told her about a new investment in some houses being built, she thought it sounded good so she gave him another 41 grand  the kitchen never got fitted and when they looked into the planning permission for these new houses they were told no-one had ever applied and they would never had got permission anyway, so she lost the lot

My advice is do it yourself. It's very satisfying 

I do everything in my house. The only thing I won't touch are electrics. Everything else I teach myself 

Anyone who spends 20 grand on a kitchen has more money than sense IMO. Kinda proved my point too by reading the rest of the story.

True Cagney, some of the stories make you think, really didn't you think too check before handing that sort of money over, nearly half of the village was owed money by him , i try and do most things myself as well, i fixed my loo the other week, well pleased with myself
