My mother used to have this stuff in tins, it was like cotton wool but thicker and soaked in something, you could get it for brass and silver (the brass one might have been called brasso?) but you rubbed it all over the metal and then buffed it with a duster.

Cleaning and care of silver
Whatever product you use to clean your silver will inevitably remove a very slight layer. Therefore, it is important to use the least abrasive materials, such as silver foam or liquid polish and to make sure that you buy the long-term variety.
Silver is a very soft metal and scratches very easily. Never use a metal polish intended for copper or brass and never use wire wool or an abrasive kitchen pad.

Dunno why but I keep thinking about tin foil!!! I remember Kim and aggie giving silver cleaning tips, do they have a website?
Silvo but be careful, do not clean it if your selling it, they like the old look not the clean look....

I'd go with the Silvo then Peter, thats what I always use, I think you can get it in liquid or the wool form, I use liquid with a soft cotton cloth....

I also remember Kim demontrating tin foil. What I remember is in a container with water add several pieces of tin foil, can't remember if she added anything else. She also mentioned toothpaste but not the gel kind, maybe you could experiment with that on a small area underneath the pot
