I know someone who models herself after Lana Turner and loves the Douglas Sirk films she made with him. But their films do not appeal to me.

Singing in the Rain is a different matter. It's not an exaggeration to say that it is the best musical ever made and manages to combine satire, comedy and music into one. Apparently, the film could have been made with Howard Keel (Gene Kelly), Judy Garland (Debbie Reynolds) and Oscar Levant (Donald O'Connor).

I didn't know that.  Interesting.
But my goodness what a different film that would have been. Hard to vizualise actually.

Picking ones favourite is rather like Desert Island Discs, in that the list would be slightly different each day.
However I agree about Singing in the Rain. There are many musicals which I love, but when pressed I invariably come back to Singing in the Rain.

I think that Calamity Jane is on at about 2am tonight on one of the main channels. Whip crack away! .... as it were.

Calamity Jane is this coming morning on ITV1 starting at 2.35 am according to my paper.
I am more than prepared to suspend my disbelief in order to enjoy such frippery and fun as Calamity Jane. I am prepared to accept that 'signed'  programmes are beneficial and appreciated by many.

But sadly the little man (bottom right in a yellowish/lime green shirt) seemed unable to enter into the spirit of the thing and quickly  proved to be a major distraction - as he would of course, because after all the film was made without him.

I found myself listening, but not watching.

Ah well!

A thing which struck me when watching Imitation of Life was the large amount of smoking that went on.
I suppose since tighter restrictions have limited the amount of smoking in the arts I must have become used to it. So that when faced once again with the big amount there used to be I was a bit surprised.  I must have adapted, but I was surprised and it was very noticeable.
