There was also the French Marcel Marceau. generally accepted as the greatest silent mime artist of all time. Although mainly on stage, he did appear in a number of films and appeared in various TV shows around the world.

Although not totally silent, we should also include another Frenchman, Jacques Tati. He only acted and directed a handful of films, but his character Monsieur Hulot was famous in his time. His films were made between the late 40s and early 70s. His films were highly regarded around the world, but I personally never took to them. They have been reissued on DVDs over the past year.
