I've never stopped using them, but then again, literacy was a big part of education in my day. It and a lot of other educational standards fell once they introduced comprehensive education, IMO

I think you mean whence - as in where something comes from. Though to be grammatically correct it should be 'as in from where something comes.' because you should not end a sentence with a preposition.

My nan always used to say that.  That's brought back memories..  She always used to say "canting" as well which is a very old Black Country term for talking.

Checking the time I too often say "5 and 20". Does that make me old-fashioned?
I also refer to people "canting" sometimes when they are talking in a huddle.
