The thing about things like hair and eye colour though, as far as I know, is that genes can skip generations. So it doesn't necessarily mean that the wife has been unfaithful by any means.
Exactly I watched a programme a while ago about the genetics of the British Isle and a huge proportion of us carry the ginger gene...I can't remember the exact figure, think it might have been about 25% of us or even more

I have twin cousins, one has dark features and brown eyes, the other ginger hair and pink blue eyes. Neither parents have ginger hair. Hmmm.

I am the only one in my family with blue eyes... brother, parents & grandparents all have brown or hazel eyes.

Tis cos the blue eye gene is a recessive gene..  so my parents must have both carried it... but alongside a brown or hazel gene which overpowered it... so they had brown/hazel eyes.

I got the blue one off both of them...  two blue  = blue eyes.

tis more complicated with skin & hair colour though...   its a combination of genes.

well .............it's all a bit scandalous really. My nan born in 1890 had two illegitamate children - to the same father but he was married and divorce was nigh on impossible especially if like the father you were Irish Catholic (that's the red hair connection). She went on to  marry someone else and had my Dad. For many years I just assumed my dads brother and sister were full blood relatives.

Things come out over the years .......................i guess it was pretty shameful in those days. Actually it makes me really proud that she loved and kept her two kids even though she was pretty much ostracised by a lot of folks.

My nan lived till 99 years old - my Dad died aged 58. The funeral was for her son he died aged 90.
