Considering that Richard Desmond is behind the purchase of Channel 5, this means that that channel will cease to be recognisable as it will ditch virtually all its cuurent programmes, including every American series shown on Channel 5 and the 2 digital channels and concentrate just on trash.

Desmond is the man behind many of the TV porn channels and stuff like Penthouse. He also owns the Daily Star, the Express and OK magazine.

This is bad news for television.

The Guardian reports that Desmond will be summonsed to appear before the House of Commons culture committee to be grilled as to what he intends to do with Channel 5. Although until 2014 the Channel 5 licence requires some output of current affairs and news, there is concern that Desmond could transform Five into a UK version of E! Entertainment, the American channel that broadcasts a diet of celebrity news and profiles 24 hours a day.

So it is far from certain that Big Brother, at least in any recognisable form, would move to Channel 5

You can forget about the likes of CSI and all the other American shows, plus the likes of Neighbours and Home & Away continuing. We will be faced with 24 hours of Ian Wright & the like.

I think five's content is a bit too saturated by American crime programming, especially CSI (which is to five what Two Pints... was to BBC3 and Friends is to E4) and of course its reputation for Hitler themed history.  It's has quite a narrow selection of programming with a bit of natural history.  After 12am it's all that seedy casino programming, so I don't think Desmond could make things a lot worse.

If C4 don't want BB then I'm pleased it will be saved and put on five.  They may mess it up, but don't C4 do that every year? (according to us on this forum)
