The previous government's pledge for faster broadband for all in the UK by 2012 has now been changed as the spokesman for BT Openreach has said that there is insufficient government funding to make this realistic.Although they still hope to be able to do this, they have said that it is now more realistic to do this by the end of this parliament - ie 2015.

The definition of "faster" is 2 megabits per second.

Don't laugh at me El Loro (I'm not very smart with technologies like you), - but does this "faster broadband for all" mean the use of fibre optic cables?

Possibly, but 2 megabits per second isn't that fast - it's what they call superfast broadband which is where that might be 100 meg and that would have to be through fibre optics. And although BT are working on this as a pilot somewhere in Wales I think, it will be years before this will be genearlly available, unless you go for cable rather than using the phone line.

2015 is a realistic target for full FTTC coverage but I doubt it will happen.  The trouble is BT are a profit making organisation and are initially rolling out FTTC to areas which currently have cable access to compete against Virgin Media.

In other words, those with decent internet get the new technology if they choose to.  While people like me who get 1mb internet continue to suffer indefinately.

I didn't know you could go as fast as 100meg. Just shows what I know.
It will take time before we in the UK can expect that speed, though through Virgin cable, it's theoretically possible to get 50 meg.

But we are way behind Malaysia, where for businesses (not yet consumers) an outfilt called unifi are talking about 100 meg to 1000 meg. That's fast!
