For years, the BBC has been behind various feature films which eventually get shown on BBC television. This coming weekend sees the start of a short seaon showing some of these films for the first time - they are being shown on BBC2. The second in the series "Eastern Promises" is being shown late as it is a very controversial film with a sex scene involving an underage prostitute, and is strictly for adults only who are familiar with the work of David Cronenburg.

The season details as they currently stand are:

  • Is Anybody There? Is Anybody There?

  • The Damned United The Damned United

Michael Sheen is Brian Clough in Peter Morgan's adaptation of David Peace's acclaimed novel.

BBC Two Sunday 18th July 9pm.(no change in time) (but because of the final round of the Golf Open this could be anythime from 9pm to 3 in the morning or postponed to another day or cancelled because the idea that the golf could just carry on Channel 301 for the majority of people who now have digital is obviously unacceptable to the BBC because everyone other than sports lovers are treated with contempt by the BBC)

The majority of the films from the BBC are from BBC Films, I think. But The History Boys is the only film which comes from BBC Two Films.

Some films are in the name of the BBC. One of the more suprising films from them is the Sam Raimi film "A Simple Plan" which I rate as the best American film of the 1990s. He is best known for the Evil Dead films and the Spiderman films, but this is his finest film in my opinion - a modern morailty tale on what greed can do to ordinary people.

This is a warning about Eastern Promises. I cannot be certain about this as I did not choose to see this film yesterday. However I understand that there is a sex scene involving an underage prostitute in which she is fully nude. As far as I can tell from the IMDB website the actress who played the prostitute was at the time either 15 or 16. As this film was made in England, there is a real possibility that a criminal offence was committed as sexual nudity is illegal under the age of 18. In another film The Reader there is a sex scene involving a boy who is underage. As this film was shot in the UK, the makers of the film deliberately waited until the actor reached his 18th birthday before shooting that scene.
