Some wild animals put on a "display" to fend off enemies don't they?
Nathan always seems to do it when he has a difference with somebody.
Maybe he is just an animated sort of person, but I rather think it is a mixture of not having the best communication skills and anger.
The F words and the semaphore are perhaps fill-ins for what he is unable to speak.
