Triggers that was what sprung to my mind.Migraines do not always result in a headache.I've had two Visual (aura) migraines.Though they ended up with sparkling lights and zigzagging prism effects (Fortressing) it's called. The first one devolped as a closing in shadow /greyness in my vision as I was a reading a newspaper. It was a bit scary first time it happened ,off to the doctor the next day,he sent  me straight to the optician who examined my eyes and luckily he too  suffered from  migraines (or unluckily for him)and recognised the symptoms.

I have had two attacks in 10 years ....so far.

Best thing to do  crunchy is off to your doctor.

Sorry for being flippant earlier Crunchy. Couldn't resist.

But I've had the same thing as Triggs and katty too... only twice but without the shadowy thing as far as I can remember, but sparkly prism as if looking through broken glass. First time it scared me to bits as I was on holiday... second time I was home and online chatting to a friend... when I explained what was happening she said she'd had the same thing too and had googled it (didn't know it was called 'fortressing' katty, thanks!). I too never had the headache to follow. Both times the effect lasted about 15 minutes and then cleared, which is apparently quite normal... Is that about how long your shadow effect lasts?

Either way, I agree you should get along to your GP to get the reassurance that is all you probably need.

I have experienced these migraine auras myself, but these were down to suffering from an overactive thyroid at the time and I no longer get them. However, Crunchy, I think it fairly unlikely that you have been suffering from migraines as the auras develop over a period of between 5 and 20 minutes and then generally last no more than 60 minutes. But your symptoms do not fit these time scales. The altenative names for these types of aura are "fortification spectra" or "teichopsia".

However, the only people who can sort your attacks out are your doctors. I and others can come up with suggestions as to what may be the cause but I and probably most of the others have no medical qualification and so the only sensible advice any of us can give is go and talk to your doctor.
