For those who don't understand it

In preparation for the World Cup, the "offside rule" explained for women:

You're in a shoe shop, second in the queue for the till. Behind the shop assistant on the till is a pair of shoes which you have seen and which you must have....

The female shopper in front of you has seen them also and is eyeing them with desire. Both of you have forgotten your purses. It would be rude to push in front of the first woman if you had no money to pay for the shoes.

The shop assistant remains at the till waiting.

Your friend is trying on another pair of shoes at the back of the shop and sees your dilemma. She prepares to throw her purse to you. If she does so, you can catch the purse, then walk round the other shopper and buy the shoes! At a pinch she could throw the purse ahead of the other shopper and "whilst it is in flight" you could nip around the other shopper, catch the purse and buy the shoes!

BUT, you must always remember that until the purse has "actually been thrown", it would be plain wrong for you to be in front of the other shopper and you would be OFFSIDE!

I think that is brilliant onetoo, but as you know from the footy thread, I understand the offside rule!!

Sometimes think that is why my husband loves me so much (apart from my charm and good nature of course ), his ex didn't like football and used to moan about it constantly, me on the other hand loves football and am counting down the days to the World Cup

*Whispers, I even have a countdown widget on my computer screen with exactly how long it is before the World Cup starts!!*

First time I've entered a footie thread lol.   I just can't find footie interesting, don't understand all the rules and although Onetoo you've found a way of explaining the offside rule for us women  ahem women like me   it still goes over my head lol  What I do find funny - if I'm in the room when hubby's watching it  - is some of the things footballers or the pundits on tv say after the match. At the weekend after some match hubby was watching someone said "he kicked it with his right hand foot"  I've heard soooo many silly/funny comments over the years that it makes me think footballers brains are in their boots, that's if they have any brains

(That's exactly how I feel about tennis)
The offside rule however is a lot more complex than portrayed here. Let us imagine a game between say Manchester United and the 'Boro.
Rule 83b........If Christian Ronaldo receives the ball in an offside position but scores, the goal stands. However if he misses and falls over it's a penalty.
Hope this helps.
