OK, maybe not officially official these days - but French has always been seen as 'the' language of Europe. Wherever Eurovision went, the results were always read out in French (Royaume Uni, nul points) but not all the other languages of the countries involved.

There has been a row in Europe, because French business types are angry that English has taken over as the language of choice for commerce. All the more recent entrants to the EU prefer it, and les Francais don't like it.

The French are trying, bless'em, but we can see by the fact that most countries now sing in English (although Iceland used a tiny bit of French in their song) and the hosts spoke English throughout (I think one of them said a couple of sentences in French), that the most widely spoken and understood foreign language in Europe is English!
