Good luck to her. I can never understand why people should carry so much hate for unforgettable contestants on bb. By that I mean them ALL as lets face it Nikki was one of the more memorable.
I personally didn't like Nikki on BB, but I don't hold her any ill will. I took part in her Web Chat here, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I genuinely wish her well in whatever she tries her hand at. It's unlikely I'll ever watch any of her future TV projects, but that's not the point.
I appreciate that she has as much right as anyone-else to enter the "Poppy Rogers" competition, however I do have misgivings about it. The idea of the contest is to try and discover some exciting new talent - like "Over the Rainbow" without the public voting.
Nikki may do wonders for Five's publicity (let's face it: how many FMs had heard about Poppy Rogers before Nikki got involved?), but she's
already an established celebrity. I can't help feeling that if (and I do think it's a big "if") she won, it wouldn't necessarily be for the right reasons, and she might be robbing some young aspiring actress of the chances that Nikki has already had.
Nikki is in a position where if she was
really serious about an acting career, she could easily go away and spend some money on proper acting lessons. Years ago, Piers Moron did a programme about celebrity, and ran a competition within it where he invited various minor celebs who wanted to get into "proper" entertainment to peddle their wares - the winner getting a show on the Edinburgh Fringe. Michael Gambon was withering in his review of the wannabe actors: "There's more to acting than just reading lines." was about his only repeatable response. Personally, I think a lot of the blame goes back to Billie Piper - not her personally, but the way that she's often portrayed. A lot of people think she's a girl of the streets who became a pop star and then turned actress virtually on a whim. In reality, she went to stage school and was a trained actress long before she was a singer.
BTW: the winner of Moron's competition was Kate Lawler, who performed a Victoria Woods routine. Jo Brand thought she was very good. I did too.
