Bazille, I've checked and you are spot on. I think there are clips of Picture Book, but I never took to that one. My brother's favourite was the Woodentops complete with "the biggest spotty dog you ever did see" if I remember correctly.

Does anyone know if the term woodentops as used for the British uniformed police officers comes from this series or something else?

 Yes... I think it was Worrying that I can remember that, from over 50 years ago... I liked the Woodentops and  Bill & Ben..... found Picture Book a bit boring.....  As for Bill & Ben... not sure that it did much for our language skills... slobbalobbalob.....

Does anyone remember the specials shown at Christmas back in I guess the lare 50s or early 60s - these were black & white (at least I think so) and were high class adaptations of various fairy tales and legends and I think were around an hour long. They were the television highlight for Christmas for me, but I cannot remember the names of any of them. I am not referring to the pantomines - these were dramas.

You are right about Whirlygigs. I never saw this as my parents did not get ITV until the mid 60s. This is a link to a page about them which has a video clip. I rmember Charlie Drake but only when he went solo with his own act.
