For the first time ever, UK soldiers have been marching in Red Square, Moscow, along with French, American and Russian soldiers to commerorate the 65th anniversary of VE day. This is a historic occasion as it is not very long ago when this would have been unthinkable. World leaders, including those from countries including Germany, China and Greece, were in attendance. However, there were no British senior figures present. Given the present election business, I can't say that it surprises me that none of the main political party leaders could be present. However, it is unclear as to whay the Russian government rejected an offer for Prince Charles to attend.

I've got to say that the sight repulsed me. It's all good and well to say that Russia was 'on Brtiain's side', but those few years do not make up for the rest of history. Well, not for me anyway.
Stalin did in more of his countrymen than Hitler ever did.

If it was supposed to promote world peace, then all the armys involved in the war should have been represented, not just the allies.
I think the important message behind today's VE Day march in Red Square is that for over 50 years after WW2, the States and the former USSR were engaged in a cold war with vast qauntities of nuclear weapons aimed at each other.Tensions had decreased in recent years but had then increased in relation to the States intention of an increased arsenal to be based in Poland next to Russia - the States saying that this was intended for rogue states rather than Russia, but Russia not accepting this. Then with the exit of George W. Bush and the arrival of Barack Obama we have seen an easing of tension leading to agreement to reduce (admittedly not abolish) the nuclear arsenal.
As far as all the armies in the world being represented, firstly this was to mark the anniversary of VE Day, ie Victory in Europe Day. It would be very strange to invite armies not involved in obtaining such victory. Secondly there were two dozen leaders from around the world including Angela Merkel from Germany. Incidentally I did not mention in my initial post that members of the Polish army also took part in the march.

I can understand fully as to why he or any other member of our royal family were not invited. Charles and most of the other male Royals strut about in uniform at events with military medals dangling off their uniforms--- What action have they seen in the wars? and what support do they give to troops that die during service abroad? Commander in Chief to the Military? It's a laugh IMO-- Give the title to someone who is in the action and dodjing bullets every day.... It's about time the "Royal " ability to out-rank all others was scrapped.... Things have moved on since these perks were introduced.. And from what i have read in the past-- Andrew was using Military choppers to get to golf venues on time. If they want the titles-- they should be out there commanding our troops, and not laid back here offering condolences when troops under their command die--- makes me sick....
I watched the celebration and I have to say I thought it highly significant and positive to see soliders from the allied forces marching ... There were soldiers there from the UK, France, USA, Poland anf probably more I'm not accounting for. The Russians really go in for their military parades and how much of a thrill must it have been for other troops to get to march in Red Square ... I thought it was a very positive thing ... And the flyover of planes was absolutely incredible!!

As I understood it the Russians wouldn't let them be present.
I watched the Welsh Guards marching in Red Square on various news programmes.
My how things have changed!
Is everything going downhill?
There was a time when a military unit would march as one man.
They would go "left, right, left, right...."
However the Guards in Red Square were not co-ordinated.
Some were doing "left, right, left right..."
while others did "right, left, right, left..."
Dearie me. A sign of our slovenly times.
